T:We are happy to have Mr. David Long here with us today.

Mr. Long is from a merchant bank in Britain. He will be talking about the organization of hisbank.

L:I feel honoured to be talking with you today. I'd like to begin with your questions.

  S:Where is your bank located?

L:In London, the capital of Britain.

S:Could you give us a brief overview of your bank's history?

L:Yes, of course. We were established as long ago as 1869.

Now, it is being operated as one of the major merchant banks in the City.

  S:How is your bank organized?

L:Well, that is really a big question.

S:Let me put it in this way. How many divisions are there in your bank?

L:All together, there are six large divisions. They are Administration Division,

Investment Management Division, Banking Division, Corporate Finance Division,

Dealing Division and the last one, Leasing Division. Now, let me explain them one by one.

First, Alministration Division. It looks after all administrative matters, such as planning,

group financial control, accounting and audit, computer services, legal services and so on.

S:Is that what we call cost centre services?

L:Yes, you are right. That's cost centre services. And then, there's the Banking Division.

This is easy to understand, right?

S:You mean, as in China, the Banking Division in your bank deals with loans, overdrafs,

  documentary credits and correspondent banking?

L:Just the same. Now, let's talk about Dealing Division. The activities of Dealing Division includeforeign exchange,

currency options, money market transactions, bonds, floating rate notes, Eurodollar CD,...

  S:Eurodollar CDs?

  学:欧元CD?

L:CD stands for Certificate of Deposit, while Eurodollar means US dollar in a European bank.

Eurodollar is used for trade within Europe.

S:Oh, I see. Next, how about your Corporate Finance Division?

L:They provide advice to most UK and international companies.

In the past several years, our Corporate Finance Division has expanded quite rapidly.

S:What kind of advice do they provide?

L:They cover mergers, capital raising, takeovers, acquisitions and divestments, and of coursestock market.

  S:Mum, I follow you now.

L:There is also an Investment Management Division in our bank.

It offers services to companies, like investment trusts, unit trusts,

pension funds and offshore funds. Now, let's come to the last division, Leasing Division.

Obviously, it organizes leasing packages for lessors and lessees.

S:So, that's how you organize your merchant bank in London.

  L:Yes, that's what we do.

T:Time is up. Mr. David Long, thank you very much for coming here to give us such animformative lecture.

  Z:Good afternoon!

  A:Good afternoon!

Z:Today I'll introduce something about the history of banking in the west.

Well, that's very interesting, the earliest banks started in Babylon almost 4 000 years ago.

They were really temples which collected deposits and made loans.

S1:I see, but I had always thought that banking started during the Renaissance in Europe.

N:No, it was much earlier than that. Then, there were banks in ancient Greece and Rome, too.

It wasn't until the breakup of the Roman Empire and the decline in trade and commercialtransactions that banking lost its previous importance.

S2:What about the laws against usury during the Middle Ages?

Didn't such laws make it illegal to charge interest on loans?

Z:Yes, they did, but these laws were gradually changed during the 14th and 15th centuries andbanking functions started appearing again in Italy and Belgium and later in France,

  Germany and England.

S3:So we can really say that banking restarted during the Renaissance.

Z:You are right. We can easily see the need for the development of the banks during thatperiod.

Commercial and financial transactions had once again started to become more complex asEurope emerged from the feudal system of the Middle Ages.

S4:Could you tell us more in detail?

Z:Yeah. For one thing, many banks started that way, especially in France and England,

but they gradually expanded their activities to handling deposits and loans,

  issuing and trading bills of exchange and even issuing their own notes;

for another thing, they started the fractional reserve system which is the central feature ofmodern banks.

S5:When did the idea of central banks get started?

Z:Well, the first bank that was partially owned and controlled by a state government wasestablished in Venice in 1587.

Then, the bank of England appeared. We could call them semi-public.

As a matter of fact, the central banks with specific regulatory functions were created in themiddle of 19th century. OK, we call it a day.

  A:Good-bye!

  Z:Good evening, Mr. Steward.

S:Good evening, Zhang Jun. Come in please. Would you like some coffee or tea?

  Z:Anything will do.

  S:Have some tea, please.

  Z:Thank you.

S:You said on the phone yesterday that you had some questions about foreign exchangedealing.

Z:Yes. With the growth of global trade, Chinese companies need foreign currencies forinternational transactions.

So, I'd like to learn more about this topic.

S:That's understandable since you are a foreign trade student.

Z:I understand that exchange rate is the value of one unit of a foreign currency expressed inanother currency.

But how are foreign exchange rates determined?

S:The price of one currency in terms of another is called the exchange rate.

This rate fluctuates according to the dictates of supply and demand,

within the limitations imposed by national and international monetary authorities.

Z:Well, do central bank interventions and exchange controls affect rates of exchange?

S:Yes, of course. But there are still other factors which affect the rates of exchange - balanceof payments,

rates of domestic inflation and the relative purchasing power of currencies,

international interests, rate differentials and other factors.

Z:Are these factors, which create a demand or lack of demand, for a particular currency easyto identify or isolate?

S:No. Very difficult. These factors always work together to affect the rates of exchange.

Z:Mr. Steward, what is spot rate?

S:Currencies can be bought or sold in foreign exchange market either for immediate deliveryor for delivery later.

So spot rate is for immediate delivery and forward rate is for delivery later.

  Z:Does the forward market help?

S:Yes, the forward market is very useful for companies of foreign trade.

S: For example, if a company knows that it will need a particular foreign currency to pay a billin a month's time,

a forward deal enables it to protect itself.

  Z:How?

S:The rate of exchange of a particular foreign currency is changing all the time because of thefactors I have just mentioned.

Future adverse movements in the exchange rate would have otherwise had the effect ofmaking the foreign goods more expensive.

Z:Oh, I see. Now, I have a clearer picture of foreign exchange. Thank you very much.

  S:You are welcome any time.

Z:It is quite late. I'd better leave now. Thank you again, Mr. Steward. Good night.

  S:Good night.
