It’s said that you don’t know a man until you walk a mile in his shoes. And you also don’t know what it’s like for older people to travel until you accompany one on a trip.
After flying with my elderly father from Washington, D.C., to L.A. in July, I began to realize that a companion has important tasks that can make a journey easier for older people. I booked nonstop tickets on JetBlue to avoid tiring, confusing connections, and we flew directly into small, manageable Long Beach Airport. Even though my father could walk, I arranged with the airline for wheelchair assistance, which meant we got on board first.
When I took him back to the airport for his return flight to Washington, I got permission from JetBlue to wait with him at the gate instead of saying goodbye at the security checkpoint. I wished he’d had a first-class seat and access to a comfortable airline club. Better yet, I wish I had flown with him both ways. As I watched the attendant wheel him to the lift that took him from the tarmac(飞机跑道)to the plane, I felt like an anxious mom sending her child to school for the first time.
Things can go awry on a plane trip. And then there is the horrifying story about Joe and Margie. When they landed at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, a wheelchair attendant met them to help with a connection. But somehow Margie, who had Alzheimer’s disease, disappeared.
I didn’t need to worry about my father wandering away; at 82, his mind was sharper than mine. But his hearing was poor, so I worried about what would happen if he missed an important announcement. Fortunately, everything went just fine. Careful planning made the trip successful.
Next time I travel with a senior, I’ll know better. I hope there will be a next time.
25. Why did the man buy nonstop tickets?
A. His father was tired of flights.
B. He had important tasks to do.
C. He cared about his father.
D. His schedule was tight.
26. How did the author feel when seeing his father off?
A. Disappointed. B. Delighted. C. Worried. D. Sad.
27. What does the underlined part “go awry” probably mean?
A. be amused.
B. carry on as usual.
C. live up to one’s expectation.
D. be away from the correct course.
28. What can we learn from the passage?
A. taking a trip does great good to seniors.
B. it is a pleasant experience to travel with seniors.
C. to have a long journey with seniors is unpractical.
D. a good arrangement ensures seniors to take a nice trip.C
The fight is on to get rid of air pollution in our cities. While the best solution in the long-term would be to ban fossil-fueled cars, that won’t help the millions who are dying in the meantime, and so some high-tech solutions are now on the cards.
In March 2016, 10 London pigeons became famous. These pigeons took to the sky from Primrose Hill in north London, wearing backpacks monitoring air pollution. Once in the air, the backpacks sent live air-quality updates to the smartphones of the Londoners below.
The pigeons and their backpacks were just the latest in a series of increasingly desperate attempts to monitor and control air pollution. London’s air pollution problem has been getting worse for years, and it often rises to more than three times the European Union’s legal limit.
Another promising approach can be found in Beijing, after China declared a “war against pollution” in 2014. A seven-metre-high “Smog Free Tower”, designed by a Dutch scientist, Daan Roosegaarde, opened in Beijing’s 751 D Park in September 2016.
It is a huge, outdoor air purifier. Airborne particles(颗粒)are sucked into the tower where they receive a positive charge. The particles are then caught by a negatively charged dust-removal plate and clean air is blown out of the other end. “Changing smog particles does not take much current.” Roosegaarde said.
As for what to do with the collected PM waste, he has currently set up a business making jewellery out of the waste. Prince Charles owns a set of “smog free” cufflinks (袖扣). If collected on at a big scale, Roosegaarde believes it could even be used as a building material.
Mexico City has an alternative solution. Looking to Nature to maximize the surface area of a building, Allison Dring, a Berlin-based architect, managed to catch light and wind from all sides. She is now making a building material by burning agricultural crop by-products in the absence of oxygen. “It means that you are actually taking carbon(碳) out of the sky, transforming it into a material, and then using it to build,” says Dring.
The fight against outdoor air pollution is really just starting. Even if none of the ideas take off, at least Prince Charles’ cufflinks, the special building surface and pigeons wearing back-packs will have brought the issue more to the public’s attention.
29. The 10 pigeons in London were used to _____.
A. monitor air pollution B. warn Londoners
C. update weather forecast D. promote backpacks
30. What can we learn about the Smog Free Tower?
A. Its power consumption is high.
B. PM waste from it can be reused.
C. It is built of agricultural by-products.
D. It can attract light and wind from all sides.
31. What’s the best title for the passage?
A. When can humans get rid of smog?
B. Why is technology used to fight smog?
C. How are the world’s cities fighting smog?
D. What makes smog a worldwide problem?D
A group of young people tired of reading ‘bad news’ have taken things into their own hands – and created a free positive newspaper.
The Champion is the resulting newspaper, which was produced with the support of the Youth Work Programme at LYCS (Lourdes Youth and Community Services) in Dublin’s north east inner city, and was funded by the County Dublin Youth Services Board (CDYSB).
The teens who put together the newspaper are aged from 13 – 19, and tired of reading in the media every day about young people hanging around and causing trouble.
This newspaper champions young people, covering a wide range of topics and including detailed reports of individual young people’s work, ambition and achievements.
“They knew themselves that there were a lot of good things happening,” explained Sarah Kelleher, director of LYCS. “Their friends were achieving a lot and no one seems to comment about that.” She said that they picked the newspaper as opposed to any other media as “it’s the printed word people see and it sticks in their mind”.
The teens understand why people want to read dramatic and negative news, and they aren’t naive about crime or other serious issues. But they feel that there are a lot of good things happening that aren’t being reported on.
Three thousand copies of The Champion have been printed, and will be going free into the letterbox of every house in the area. “I think they are hoping people will be pleasantly surprised,” said Kelleher.
The concept came from a small number of people, but in the end it took the work of at least 50 people to complete the whole project.
They contacted youth clubs, schools, and other groups to find out what positive news they had to share.
The Champion also serves to promote youth work, which Sarah says “is a very low-cost service to run, but it can have an absolutely amazing impact for young people in a community like this”. She added that cuts can have an impact on youth work, and that “the more you keep young people in youth work, the more things like this they produce”.
32. Why did the teens start the newspaper?
A. To promote youth work. B. To promote positive news.
C. To free teens from reading. D. To compete with other newspapers.
33. What is special of the newspaper?
A. It is meant for young readers. B. It sells thousands of copies a day.
C. It focuses on teens’ good deeds. D. It covers positive news of adults.

A. They get news from many sources.
B. They care little about social issues.
C. They prefer to write astonishing news.
D. They can’t accept negative news being reported.
35. What quality of the teens is highlighted in the passage?
A. team spirit. B. creative thinking.
