  John Adams (1735-1826)

The Massachusetts-born, Harvard-educated Adams began his career as a lawyer. Then he became a critic of Great Britain’s authority in America and was a leader of the American Revolution later. From 1789 to 1797, Adams was America’s first vice president. He was elected in the Presidential election of 1796 and served a single four-year term as the second U.S. president from 1797 to 1801.

  Andrew Jackson (1767-1845)

Born in poverty, Andrew Jackson had become a wealthy Tennessee lawyer and rising young politician by 1812, when war broke out between the United States and Britain. His leadership in that conflict earned Jackson national fame as a military hero, and he would become America’s most influential political figure during the 1820s and 1830s. Andrew Jackson became the nation’s seventh president (1829-1837).

  John Quincy Adams (1767—1848)

As secretary of state under James Monroe, Adams played a key role in determining the president’s foreign policy. He went on to win the presidency in an election in 1824, and served only one term.

  Abraham Lincoln (1809—1865)

Abraham Lincoln was the 16th president of the United States from 1861 until his shocking death in 1865. Dear Mr. Jones,

I expect you may be slightly surprised to receive a letter from someone living as near as your next-door neighbor; but I have to raise a subject that it will be easier for me to discuss in writing.

You may have noticed that I have a line of apple trees running alongside the fence that separates our two gardens. You may also have taken pleasure in the frequent sight of your two children sitting on your lawn directly by the fence. And you may also have noticed that my apple trees, so to speak, bend over the fence and seem to look down at your children with interest.

It is only natural that your children should sometimes seem to return that interest. And it is not only natural, but, I acknowledge, quite legal, for them occasionally to show that interest by picking all the apples that hang over on your side of the fence.

But to be plain with you, Mr. Jones, I am tired of seeing your children, day after day, tear the branches off the side of every one of my apple trees, and leave my trees looking as though a battle had been fought on one side of them. I am, if anything, even more tired of waking up these fine autumn mornings, to find even the apples on my side of the fence much less in number. I know this is the work of your children, since last night I was woken at midnight by the noise they were making climbing one of my trees, and (as they may have told you) chased them home.

While I am on the subject, I am at least grateful to you for keeping your bonfires on the far side of your garden this year. Last year neither I nor your children had any apples, because the smoke from your bonfire destroyed all the flowers before the apples had time to form. I hope that next year—for the first time since I came to this village—I shall have my apples, and your children will have theirs and that the sight of the line of apple trees will be a pride to us both.

Otherwise, I shall not express my displeasure simply in writing to you, but shall have to refer the matter to those capable of taking stronger action.

  Yours sincerely,

  J. Smith.

Do you have a business brain? Are you always looking for the next big idea? Maybe, like me, you might feel setting up a new company is something you might do when you’re older, when you have more experience. But that’s not always the case.

While some of us may feel young adulthood is a time of uncertainly finding our place in the world, sleeping late and partying hard, others are already on a path to great business success. Take the founder of Microsoft, Bill Gates, who started his company as a young university stu dent at Harvard in the US. There are many other examples of young entrepreneurs (企业家) who have become hugely successful, proving that there’s no minimum age to becoming top dog.

But to be the next business executive requires effort. You need to acquire a keen mind and good business intelligence and above all, you need enthusiasm. Starting a new business comes with an element of risk but if you are able to spot the next big idea, it’s probably worth giving it a try. Jessica Rose owns a jewelry making business and admits that “when I first started I had no business training but when I woke up one day, I thought I’d really love to be a jewelry designer.” She we nt on to be a successful young entrepreneur.

Being young and in business does have its drawbacks; you may worry you have nothing to bring to the table and that the people who work for you tend to be older and wiser. That’s what young British entrepreneur Suleman Sacranie found. He started his third business while studying chemistry at university. He says “now I’ve got two additional directors who have grey hair” but when they first started he says he could tell they were thinking in the back of their heads, “I’ve got a kid sitting in front of me.”

You may think setting up a new start-up is easier said than done. As well as ideas, you need financial backing and expert guidance. But if you’re studying hard at university and don’t have the desire to go into business and make your fortune, keep on studying – an education is priceless!

  29. At the very beginning, what’s the author’s attitude to the necessity of being aged and experienced in setting up a new company?

  A. Supportive. B. Negative. C. Impersonal. D. Critical.

  30. The author takes Jessica Rose for example in order to show that __________.

  A. doing business needs great effort

  B. enthusiasm is more important than a keen mind

  C. business training is not necessary

  D. it is easy to set up a new business

  31. What can be inferred from the las t two paragraphs?

  A. Older directors shouldn’t be employed if you are young.

  B. Age plays an important role in setting up new business.

  C. If you don’t intend to set up business, just focus on your study.

  D. Education is more valuable than setting up a business.

  D

Anxiety has now surpassed depression as the most common mental health disease among college students, though depression, too, is on the rise. More than half of students visiting campus clinics cite anxiety as a health concern, according to a recent study of more than 100,000 students nationwide by the Center for Collegiate Mental Health at Penn State.

The causes range widely, experts say, from mounting academic pressure at earlier ages to overprotective parents to engagement with social m edia. Anxiety has always played a role in the development of a student’s life, but now more students experience anxiety so acute that they are seeking professional help.

Anxiety has become characteristic of the current generation of college students, said Dan Jones, the director of Counseling and Psychological Services at Appalachian State University in Boone, N. C. Because of increasingly pressures during high school, he and other experts say, students arrive a t college preloaded with stress. Accustomed to extreme parental oversight, many seem unable to govern themselves. And with parents so accessible, students have had less incentive to develop life skills. “They can’t tolerate discomfort or having to struggle,” Dr Jones said.

More often, anxiety is mild and temporary, the indication of a student under the control of a normal developmental issue-learning time management, for example, or how to handle rejection from a sorority(女生联谊会). Mild anxiety is often treatable with early, modest interventions. But to care for rising numbers of severely troubled students, many counseling centers have moved to triage protocols (分诊措施). That means that students with less urgent needs may wait several weeks for first appointments.

32.What results in anxiety mentioned according to the passage?

  A. Overprotection from parents and teachers. B. The social media pressure.

  C. The development of students’ life. D. Considerably learning pressure

  33. What does the underlined word “incentive” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?

  A. Motivation. B. Attention C. Appreciation. D. Direction.

  34. How do many counseling centers deal with some severely troubled students?

  A. To send them to some psychological hospitals. B. To teach them how to manage time.

  C. To move to triage protocols. D. To treat them with early, modest interventions.

  35. Which of the following would be the best title for the text?

  A. College mental health centers overburdened with depression students.

  B. Students burdened with anxiety on the rise

  C. Different mental diseases among college students.

  D. Anxiety and mental problems.

Positive thinkers admit when they feel frustrated or depressed, they don't ignore it. But they don't blame themselves either. 36 They counter(反击)them with more positive ones.

So how do you stay positive, maintain motivated and sustain healthy behaviors? Here are some tips:

Get support. Tell your friends and family about your healthy habits. It helps to have an encouraging network.

Reward yourself. 39 Take a nice bath, get a massage, and enjoy a new DVD or CD.

Have a plan. Making a plan to exercise or eat healthy lunches with a friend can mean the difference of sticking with your goals or falling off rack. If you've planned for an activity, you'll like stick with it. You may even find that writing down your goals and steps to achieve them can help you stay on track. Take it day by day or week by week. 40

  Dear Sir,

I am Li Hua, an undergraduate major in English. I’d like to apply the position as an oral English training teacher for the volunteers of the 2022 Winter Olympics.

As the English major, I have been studied at New York University as an exchange student for one year. My oral English improved great there because of the real English environment and various activities that I learned much about western culture. Furthermore, my outgoing personality makes it an advantage to communicate with the volunteers. Otherwise, there is no one more suitable than you.

Considering the levels among the volunteers, I’ve planned to give a training course with three levels which begin with the basics. Moreover, more knowledges beside s language will be delivered , such as foreign customs.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

  Yours sincerely,

  Li Hua

  Hi, Tony!

I’m glad that you will come to Beijing soon. There are lots of places of interest in Beijing. In order to experience traditional Chinese culture better, I do recommend Beijing Hutong tour.

First, we’re going to go sightseeing along the lanes in Hutong. The houses in Hutong are traditional, such as Siheyuan. From them, you can imagine how people used to live. Of course you can stop anywhere you like and it is interesting to take pictures or have a close look. Second, we are going to pay visits to a Hutong family. We can have lunch there and have a short talk with the local residents, which can help you learn about many stories of the past. We can not only appreciate the dramatic chang es that Hutong has undergone, but also see evidence of the history of Beijing, experience the old way of life and experience traditional Beijing culture.

In a word, Hutongs are the homes of common people in the past. It is easy to know how people lived and had fun in the old days. So it is a good choice to learn about traditional Chinese culture.

I’m looking forward to your coming.

  Yours,

  Li Hua
