Won-Done Song
Men all know that salvation should be won,
But with ambition won’t have done, have done.
Where are the famous ones of days gone by?
In grassy graves they lie now, every one.
Men all know that salvation should be won.
But with their riches won’t have done, have done.
Each day they grumble they’ve not made enough.
When they’ve enough, it’s good night everyone!
Men all know that salvation should be won.
But with their loving wives they won’t have done.
The darlings every day protest their love:
But once you’re dead, they’re off with another one.
Men all know that salvation should be won,
But with their children won’t have done, have done.
Yet though of parents fond there is no lack,
Of grateful children saw I ne’er a one.
秋花惨淡秋草黄,耿耿秋灯秋夜长;
助秋风雨来何速?惊破秋窗秋梦续;
泪烛摇摇爇短檠,牵愁照恨动离情;
罗衾不奈秋风力,残漏声催秋雨急;
寒烟小院转萧条,疏竹虚窗时滴沥;
A Windy; Rainy Evening by the Autumn Window
Sad the autumn flowers, scar the autumn grass,
Autumn lamps flicker through the long autumn night,
Unendurably desolate by the autumn window,
In the wind and rain autumn seems infinite.
The wind and rain speed autumn on its way,
By the window shattering her autumn dream;
And the girl with autumn in her heart cannot sleep
But trims the candle by her autumn screen.
Guttering on its stick, the candle sheds tears of wax,
Evoking the grief of separation, its pain,
As through each autumn courtyard gusts the wind,
And on each autumn window beats the rain.
The autumn wind, through silken quilts strikes chill,
Her water-clock the autumn rain spurs on.
All night the pelting rain and soughing wind
Accompany her tears for one now gone.
Chill mist enwraps the court in loneliness,
Bamboos drip by the lattice without pause;
None can tell when the wind and rain will cease,
But already tears have soaked her window’s gauze.
Gazing on Mount Tai
Du Fu
O peak of peaks, how high it stands!
One boundless green o’erspreads two States.
A marvel done by Nature’s hands,
O’er light and shade it dominates.
Clouds rise therefrom and lave my breast;
My eyes are strained to see birds fleet.
Try to ascend the mountain’s crest:
It dwarfs all peaks under our feet.
To Li Bai
Du Fu
When autumn comes, you’re drifting still like thistledown;
You try to find the way to heaven, but you fail.
In singing mad and drinking dead your days you drown.
O when will fly the roc? O when will leap the whale?
Satire on Fair Ladies
Du Fu
The weather’s fine in the third moon on the third day,
By riverside so many beauties in array.
Each of the ladies has a fascinating face,
Their skin is delicate, their manner full of grace.
Embroidered with peacocks and unicorns in gold,
Their dress in rich silks shines so bright when spring is old.
What do they wear on the head?
Emerald pendant leaves hang down in silver thread.
What do you see from behind?
How nice-fitting are their waistbands with peals combined.
Among them there’re the emperor’s favorite kin,
Ennobled Duchess of Guo comes with Duchess of Qin.
What do they eat?
The purple meat
Of camel’s hump cooked in green cauldron as a dish;
On crystal plate is served snow-white slices of raw fish.
See rhino chopsticks the satiated eaters stay,
And untouched morsels carved by belled knives on the tray.
When eunuchs’ horses come running, no dust is raised;
They bring still more rare dishes delicious to the taste.
Listen to soul-stirring music of flutes and drums!
On the main road an official retinue comes.
A rider ambles on saddled horse, the last of all,
He alights, treads on satin carpet, enters the hall.
The willow down like snow falls on the duckweed white;
The blue bird picking red handkerchief goes in flight.
The prime minister’s powerful without a peer.
His angry touch would burn your hand. Do not come near!
