Former teammate Shaquille O'Neal recently chimedin on his show, The Big Podcast with Shaq: "He willnever go to the Big 3 before he does the NBA. Everybody knows who Kobe is. You're telling meKobe can't give somebody a nice 15-20 minutes agame. If you align all the dots and align all themoons and oceans... if he came back at 40 then theannouncement would be the biggest sports announcement in history.

But during an appearance on "The Rich Eisen Show," the newly-turned 40-year-old restated hefirmly is retired: "There's about a zero percent chance that I come back and play. ...Nothing. Done. That's it."

Never. Here's the thing, for us athletes, it's really hard to transition from that. I was reallypersonal about it when I wrote "Dear Basketball."

That is the true challenge, of finding what comes next. Finding something you love to do everybit as much as you love your first passion.

That is a challenge for us. I think unfortunately for us athletes, we've been pigeonholed intothinking that we can only be one thing.

So when I retired, everybody said, 'OK, he's too competitive. He's not going to know what todo with himself. He's going to have to come back.' I took that as a personal challenge of themthinking I'm this one-dimensional person. That all I know is how to dribble a ball, shoot theball and play basketball and compete at that level. So I took it as a personal challenge.

I will never come back to the game. Ever. I'm here to show people we can do much more thanthat. Creating this business, winning an Oscar, winning an Emmy, and an Annie, those arethings that are showing athletes that come after, 'No, no. There's more to this thing.' So Iwould never (return). It's not even a thought."

We assume exercise improves our mental health. But what kind of exercise works best?

Researchers looking at the link between physical activity and mental health found that team sports fared best, followed by cycling, either on the road or a stationary bike.

The study, published in the journal Lancet Psychiatry this month, is among the first of its kind, and the largest, analyzing the effect of different types of exercise.

It found that physical activity typically performed in groups, such as team sports and gym classes, provided greater benefits than running or walking.

Researchers rated mental health based on a survey. It asked respondents how many days in the previous month their mental health was "not good" due to stress, depression or problems with emotions.

People who played team sports like soccer and basketball reported 22.3% fewer poor mental-health days than those who didn't exercise. Those who ran or jogged fared 19% better, while those who did household chores 11.8% better.

In a secondary analysis, the researchers found that yoga and tai chi—grouped into a categorycalled recreational sports in the original analysis—had a 22.9% reduction in poor mental-health days. (Recreational sports included everything from yoga to golf to horseback riding.)

Adam Chekroud, the senior author on the study, is a chief scientist and co-founder of SpringHealth, a New York City-based mental-health startup, and an assistant professor of psychiatryat Yale University.

He says team sports may have an extra benefit because of the social component, andyoga/tai chi promote mindfulness, which is often touted as beneficial for mental health.

He would like to explore with further research why some activities scored higher than others tosee if exercise regimes can be personalized to choose the most relevant and helpful type.

The researchers also found that those who exercise between 30 and 60 minutes had the bestmental health, with 45 minutes the optimal duration. Exercising three to five times a weekcorrelated with fewer dark days.

More exercise wasn't always better. "Over 90 minutes of exercise and there isn't an extrabenefit," Dr. Chekroud says.

The study analyzed the exercise habits and mental health of 1.2 million U.S. adults, based onself-reported answers to survey questions from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

It wasn't a randomized controlled study and therefore didn't prove causality, just anassociation between exercise and better mental health. It can't explain if poor mental healthcauses people to exercise less or exercise causes people to have better mental health.
