Time flies, but the tracks of time remain in books and museums. This is what made a recent tragedy in Brazil even more terrible.
On Sept.2, a big fire ripped through the National Museum of Brazil. “ Two hundred years of work, research and knowledge were lost, ” Brazilian President Michel Temer wrote on Twitter after the fire. “It's a sad day for all Brazilians.”
Most of the 20 million pieces of history are believed to have been destroyed. Only as little as 10 percent of the collection may have survived, Time reported. Among all the items, there were Egyptian mummies, the bones of uniquely Brazilian creatures such as the long-necked dinosaur Maxakalisaurus, and an 11, 500-year-old skull called Luzia, which was considered one of South America's oldest human fossils.
Besides these, Brazil's indigenous(本土的,土著的) knowledge also suffered. The museum housed world-famous collections of indigenous objects, as well as many audio recordings of local languages from all over Brazil. Some of these recordings, now lost, were of languages that are no longer spoken.
“The tragedy this Sunday is a sort of national suicide, a crime against our past and future generations,” Bernard Mello Franco, one of Brazil's best-known columnists, wrote on the O Globo newspaper site.
The cause of the fire is still unknown, as BBC News reported on Sept. 3. After the fire burned out, crowds protested outside the museum to show their anger at the loss of the irreplaceable items of historical value.
According to Emilio Bruna, an ecologist at the University of Florida, museums are living, breathing stores of who we are and where we've come from, and the world around us.
Just as underwater grass floats on the surface if it loses its roots, a nation is lost without its memories. The fire at the National Museum of Brazil teaches the world an important lesson: We should never neglect history.
24.What can be summarized as the main idea of the 3rd and 4th paragraphs?
A. Long history of South America. B. Remains from the fire.
C. Mysteries to be solved. D. History and knowledge burned up.
25. What opinion may be shared by Bernard Mello Franco and the protesters?
A. The government is to blame for the tragedy.
B. The museum should be rebuilt
C. The loss can't be made up for.
D. The criminal should be sentenced to death.
26. What does Emilio Bruna compare museums to?
A. Living stores of our past. B. Underwater grass.
C. The oldest fossils. D. National suicide.
27. What may be the best title of the passage?
A. Death of a civilization B. Functions of museums
C. Gone with the fire D. Brazilians' memories
C
Are you a procrastinator(拖拉者)? It’s a common problem. And it can be harmful, as previous research has shown that people who procrastinate have higher levels of stress and lower well-being, reported the Association for Psychological Science in the US. But a new study has found a way to deal with this problem: Be more connected to your future self.
Psychologists think that each person believes that they are really two people: “Present Me” and “Future Me”. “People act as if they prefer their current selves’ needs and desires to those of their future selves,” wrote psychologists Neil Lewis and Daphna Oyserman.
Oyserman and Lewis decided to try to find a way to make “Present Me” imagine exactly how “Future Me” would feel the night before a big paper was due, though “Present Me” hadn’t started yet. They made “Present Me” think about a far-off event as a number of days away, not months or years.
Thinking about events in this way meant that something like a friend’s wedding seemed 16.3 days sooner when considered in days rather than months and 11.4 months sooner when considered in months rather than years.
The researchers also tried to find out whether people would take action sooner if they were told a certain event was happening in X days rather than years. For example, participants imagined they had a newborn child, and that the child would need to go to college in either 18 years or 6,570 days. The researchers found those in the “days” condition planned to start saving four times sooner than those in the “years” condition.
So if you think of your life in days instead of years, you may get things done quicker.
28. What did Oyserman and Lewis intend to do through their study?
A. To work on a solution to test if someone is a procrastinator.
B. To find out whether human beings usually have two different characters.
C. To discover procrastinators are more likely to have a lower sense of well-being.
D. To prove it’s helpful to connect our current selves more with future selves.
29. The underlined part “this way” in Paragraph 4 refers to “_________”.
A. setting up tough deadlines
B. following schedules strictly
C. counting in smaller units of time
D. imagining how your future self will feel
30. What helps prevent people from procrastinating?
A. Comparing their future selves with present selves.
B. Considering their current selves’ needs and desires.
C. Thinking about far-off events in days rather than years.
D. Marking important events on a calendar as a reminder.
31. What does the passage mainly talk about?
A. A way to get things done in time.
B. The harmful effects of procrastination.
C. The reason to overlook future needs and desires.
D. The way to reduce stress and improve happiness.
D
Cold weather during winter months may keep many people from leaving home and running in the open air.
However, a new study shows that the drop in temperature is a good reason to run. In fact, researchers say, running in cold weather helps improve one’s performance.
Many people say running in the winter can be difficult. Two reasons are the low temperatures and bitter winds. Yet many runners might find it easier than running in hot weather.
That could be because lower temperatures reduce stress on the body. When you run in cold weather, your heart rate and the body’s dehydration (脱水) levels are lower than in warmer conditions. The body needs less water on a cold day than in warm weather.
This information comes from sports scientists at St. Mary’s University in London. John Brewer is a professor of applied sport science at St. Mary’s.
For this study, he and other researchers put a group of people into a room they called an “environmental chamber.” The researchers then recreated summer and winter weather conditions in the room. The test subjects were asked to run 10,000 meters under both conditions. Brewer says he and his team recorded biological measurements of the runners.
“We’ve got a group of subjects into the environmental chamber, we’ve changed the conditions to replicate the summer or winter and we’ve got them to run a 10km under both of those conditions and taken various measurements on each runner while they’ve been completing their 10km.”
Brewer says every movement runners make produces heat. He explains that one way in which we lose heat is by sweating. The body loses heat through droplets of sweat. He says the body also loses heat by transporting the blood to the surface of the skin.
32. What can we know about running in winter?
A. It increases pressure of the body. B. It improves the function of body.
C. It makes your heart rate higher. D. It needs more water than in summer.
33. What can we know about the research according to the text?
A. Researchers interviewed the subjects
B. Subjects were asked to run in winter and summer.
C. Subjects built the “environmental chamber”.
D. Biological measurements of the runners were recorded.
34. Which of the following can replace the underlined word “replicate” in Paragraph 7?
A. Combine. B. Remember. C. Copy. D. Decorate.
35. What’s the best title for the passage?
A. Environmental Chamber B. The Way of Losing Heat
C. Running in Cold Weather Improves Performance
D. Biological Measurements of the Runners

If you’re a gamer who’s constantly glued to your phone, it could be time to ask for medical help.
On June 18, 2018, the World Health Organization(WHO)officially listed “gaming disorder” as a mental health condition. 36
“Video gaming is like a non-financial kind of gambling (赌博)from a psychological point of view,” Mark Griffiths, a professor from Nottingham Trent University in the UK, told the Associated Press(AP). “Gamblers use money as a way of keeping score, while gamers use points.”
37 “People need to understand this doesn’t mean every child who spends
hours in their room playing games is an addict, otherwise doctors are going to be flooded with requests for help,” Joan Harvey, a spokeswoman for the British Psychological Society, told AP.
38 For example, a 21-year-old Chinese woman surnamed Wu in Guangdong province went blind in one eye after playing the mobile game King of Glory for a whole day. “On days when I have no work, I usually get up at 6 am, eat breakfast and play until 4 pm,” she told the South China Morning Post. “Then I’ll eat something, have a nap(小睡)and play until 1 am.”
Wu isn’t alone. According to a study published by China Youth Daily, about one in five young Chinese people play online video games for at least four to five hours per day. 39 In April, the Ministry of Education issued a notice asking Chinese schools and parents to prevent students from becoming addicted to the Internet and games.
Other countries have also taken action. 40 Meanwhile, in Japan, some mobile phones have a special mode for children that lets their parents control what games they can download and how long they can play.
A. This means it’s now on the same list as other mental illnesses.
B. Thankfully, measures have been taken to deal with the problem.
C. We often see people around us playing games on their mobile phones.
D. In South Korea, children are forbidden to play video games after midnight.
E. WHO’s main work is to improve the mental health of individuals and society.
F. But if you lose control over your gaming habits, you’ll face serious problems.
G. However, it doesn’t matter if you play your favorite game now and then.

Dear Robert,
I’m sorry to hear you have some trouble getting along with your friends. Here are some suggestions for you.
Firstly, you’d better find out what got you into such a mess, and then turn to your teachers or parents for advice. Secondly, why not open your mind to communicate with your friends frankly? It shows you really cherish the friendship between you and value their viewpoints. Besides, in your daily life, it’s wise to be ready to help your friends and people around you. In this way, you can not only win back your old friends but also make some new ones.

In bringing up children, every parent watches eagerly the child’s acquisition (学会) of each new skill—— the first spoken words, the first independent steps, or the beginning of reading and writing. It is often tempting to hurry the child beyond his natural learning rate, but this can set up dangerous feelings of failure and states of worry in the child. This might happen at any stage. A baby might be firced to use a toilet too early. A young child might be encouraged to learn to read before he knows the meaning of the words he reads. On the other hand, though, if a child is left alone too much, or without any learning opportunities, he loses his natural enthusiasm for life and his desire to find out new things for himself.
Parents vary greatly in their degree of strictness towards their children. Some may be especially strict in money matters. Others are severe over time of coming home at night or punctuality for meals. In general, the controls represent the needs of the parents and the values of the community as much as the child’s own happiness.
As regards the development of moral standards in the growing child, consistency (一致性)is very important in parental teaching. To forbid a thing one day and excuse it the next is no foundation for morality. Also, parents should realize that “example is better than precept”. If they are not sincere and do not practice what they say, their children may grow confused and emotionally insecure when they grow old enough to think for themselves, and realize they have been to some extent fooled.
A sudden awareness of an obvious difference between their parents’ principles and their morals can be a dangerous disappointment.
24. In the process of children’s learning new skills parents ________.
A. should encourage them to read before they know the meaning of the words they read
B. should not expect too much of them
C. should achieve a balance between pushing them too hard and leaving them on their own
D. should create as many learning opportunities as possible
25. The second paragraph mainly tells us that _________.
A. parents should be strict with their children
B. parental controls reflect only the needs of the parents and the values of the community
C. parental restrictions vary, and are not always enforced for the benefit of the children alone
D. parents vary in their strictness towards their children according to the situation
26. The word “precept” (Line3, Para.3) probably means “_______”.
A. ideas B. punishment C. behavior D. instructions
27. In moral matters, parents should ________.
A. observe the rules themselves
B. be aware of the marked difference between adults and children
C. forbid things which have no foundation in morality
D. consistently ensure the security of their children

Once, African lions were the kings of the jungle. But every day, they lose more and more of their home to humans. A new study done by Duke University shows that humans have taken over much of the lions habitat.
Lions live on the African plains, which are called savannas. In the past 5 years, the number of people living on the Savannas African plains has grown rapidly. At the same time, the number of lions has dwindled quickly.
The research team at Duke University used detailed pictures taken by satellite to carefully examine the African landscape. They were able to see very small farms and towns that are taking over the once-open plains. Lions need wide-open spaces to hunt. As the number of people and towns has increased, the African plains have become less welcoming to lions. The number of lions has dropped from about 100, 000 in 1960 to 32,000 today. West Africa has seen the largest drop ——fewer than 500 lions remain there.
Researchers worry that the number of lions will decrease even more as the number of humans moving onto the savannas increases. People and lions living closely together have to compete for natural resources like water and food. Towns and farms that take over hunting grounds could force the lions out of those areas completely. Often, lions with no other sources of food will kill farm animals. Farmers will then kill the lions to protect their animals. African lions are also threatened by poachers, who hunt animals illegally. Many poachers hunt lions for sport or to take their fur.

Sign has become a scientific hot button. Only in the past 20 years have specialists in language study realized that signed languages are unique—a speech of the hand. They offer a new way to explore how the brain generates and understands language, and throw new light on an old scientific controversy: whether language, complete with grammar, is something that we are born with, or whether it is a learned behavior. The current interest in sign language has roots in the pioneering work of a teacher at Gallaudet University in Washington, D. C., the world’s only liberal arts university for deaf people.
When Bill Stokoe went to Gallaudet to teach English, the school enrolled him in a course in signing. But Stokoe noticed something strange: among themselves, students signed differently from his classroom teacher.
Stokoe had been taught a sort of gestural code, each movement of the hands representing a word in English. At the time, American Sign Language (ASL) was thought to be no more than a form of pidgin English (混杂英语). But Stokoe believed the“hand talk”his students used looked richer. He wondered: Might deaf people actually have a genuine language? And could that language be unlike any other on Earth? It was 1955, when even deaf people considered their signing as “substandard”. Stokoe’s idea was academic heresy (异端邪说).
It is 37 years later. Stokoe—now devoting his time to writing and editing books and journals and to producing video materials on ASL and the deaf culture—is having lunch at a cafe near the Gallaudet campus and explaining how he started a revolution. For decades, educators fought against his idea that signed languages are natural languages like English, French and Japanese. They assumed language must be based on speech, the modulation (调节) of sound. But sign language is based on the movement of hands, the modulation of space. “What I said,” Stokoe explains, “is that language is not mouth stuff—it’s brain stuff.”
32.What aroused the present growing interest in sign language?
A. A famous scholar in the study of the human brain.
B. A leading specialist in the study of liberal arts.
C. An English teacher in a university for the deaf.
D. Some senior experts in American Sign Language.
33. According to Stokoe, sign language is ________.
A. a substandard language B. a genuine language
C. an artificial language D. an international language
34. Most educators objected to Stokoe’s idea because they thought ________.
A. sign language was not widely used even by deaf people
B. sign language was too artificial to be widely accepted
C. a language should be easy to use and understand
D. a language could only exist in the form of speech sounds
35. Stokoe’s argument is based on his belief that ________.
A. sign language is as efficient as any other language
B. sign language originated from natural language
C. language is a system of meaningful codes
D. language is a product of the brain

Dear Sir/Madam,
I’ve learned from the city school website that your school is in need of ten teaching assistants to foreign teachers this summer vacation. I’m writing to apply for the position. I’m confident that I’m equal to it.
First of all, having been exposed to foreign teachers since a young age, I have a good command of spoken English and can communicate freely with others in English. What’s more, years of experience of being a monitor makes me a brilliant organizer, which will help keep the class in order. What is most important is that I love kids, and I’m confident that my patience and care will undoubtedly win their trust.
All in all, I think my enthusiasm and full sense of responsibility will prove me a qualified teaching assistant. I’d appreciate it if you could take my application into consideration and give me a chance.
Looking forward to your reply.
Yours truly,
Li Hua

In general, people talk about two groups of colors: warm colors and cool colors. Researchers in psychology think that there are also two groups of people: people who prefer warm colors and people who prefer cool colors.
The warm colors are red, orange and yellow. Where there are warm colors and a lot of light, people usually want to be active. People think that red, for example, is exciting. Sociable people, those who like to be with others, like red. The cool colors are green, blue and violet. These colors, unlike warm colors, are relaxing. Where there are cool colors, people are usually quiet. People who like to spend time alone often prefer blue.
Red may be exciting, but one researcher says that time seems to pass more slowly in a room with warm colors than in a room with cool colors. He suggests that a warm color, such as red or orange is a good color for a living room or restaurant. People who are talking or eating do not want time to pass quickly. Cool colors are better for offices or factories if the people who are working there want time to pass quickly.
Researchers do not know why people think some colors are warm and other colors are cool. However, almost everyone agrees that red, orange, and yellow are warm and that green, blue, and violet are cool. Perhaps warm colors remind people of warm days and the cool colors remind them of cool days. Because in the north the sun is higher during summer, the hot summer sunlight appears yellow.
13. Which of the following colors belong to cool colors?
A. Yellow, green B. Blue, violet C. Black, blue D. Brown, white
14. Which of the following statements is not true?
A. Sociable people like warm colors.
B. Warm colors can make people excited.
C. People who like to be with others don’t like red.
D. Where there are warm colors, people want to be active.
15. Which is the right color for different rooms?
A. Orange for dining-rooms. B. Red or orange for offices.
C. Blue for bedrooms. D. Red for studies.
16. What is the main idea of the last paragraph?
A. It shows the reason why people think some colors are warm and others are cool.
B. Warm colors remind people of warm days.
C. Cool colors remind people of cool days.
D. People have an agreeable opinion of warm colors and cool colors.
D
For many foreigners who have visited or worked in China, one of their strong impressions is that the country is very safe. Here, you can go out alone late at night to eat at a food stand without feeling nervous. You can also let your younger children ride public transport all by themselves without worrying about their safety.
This year, 2018, marks 8 special anniversaries of the launching of the reform and opening up policy, which took place two score years ago in China. Over the past few decades, the country has achieved fast economic growth, while social peace and stability have been maintained(维护) to the fullest extent at the lowest cost. Of course, there are still unsolved problems. However, from the overall aspect, Chinese society remains harmonious and safe. In my eyes , this should be attributed(归于) largely to the cultural, economic and political environment of the country.
A society can be stable and orderly only when its people can lead a prosperous(繁荣的) life. After the introduction of the reform and opening up policy, China achieved fast economic growth and significant scientific and technological progress. In the meantime, the Chinese government has taken various measures such as those to fight corruption, reduce poverty and promote the rule of law, in order to uphold social equity. Thanks to these efforts, the potential factors that might cause social problems have been greatly reduced.
Apart from government departments including the police and judicial(司法的) departments , the general public also contributes much to social governance. The development of information technology has created new ways of linking the police and the public. By jointly fighting crimes in such ways, the public and the police have developed an ever-increasing level of mutual trust and positive interaction.
The safety and stability in China did not come easily. Rather, it should be attributed to the efforts made by 1.3 billion people. For both Chinese and foreigners living in the country, the sense of safety and security is very precious.
17. The main idea of the passage is that .

A. Most foreigners lack a sense of safety when staying in China.
B. Government departments rather than the general public play an important role in keeping social peace and stability.
C. People’s prosperous life in a country can lead to a stable and orderly society.

Our beloved dogs passed away a few days before. She was about to cross the road while a truck ran out of the control and knocked her over. I had no idea how to react her sudden death. So did my little sister. She was always in tear. She couldn’t accept the fact and kept asked me, “Why can’t I see her again?” We felt heartbreaking deeply. Our parents suggested in the end that we adopted another one. I couldn’t agree more. But we will never forget our sweet dog what passed away.

参考答案
W: Good morning. This is Fly Away Travel. How can I help you?
M: I would like to inquire about a ticket to New York.
W: When will you be leaving, sir?
M: September 10. Could you tell me how much it will be?
W: Since you are booking early, it will only be 250 dollars.
M: I assume the price will be higher if I call just a day or so before I want to leave.
W: That is correct. If you don’t make an advance purchase, the price will be 541 dollars. Of course, by calling early, you also guarantee that there will be space available.
M: I guess it’s good that I called today.
W: Would you like a morning or an afternoon flight?
M: I would prefer a morning flight, but not too early.
W: We have a flight that leaves at 9:00 a.m. How about that?
M: Perfect.
W: I can hold this reservation until September 7. If you want to guarantee this price, you must pay for the ticket at least one week before your departure date. How will you be paying for the ticket?
M: I will be using a credit card, and we may as well take care of that right now.
W: OK. No problem.

Dear Sir/Madam,
My name is Li Hua, a student from XinShiJi Senior High School. With graduation drawing near, I’m desperate for the opportunity to go to Hongkong University. Therefore, I’m writing to consult you about some necessary information.
To begin with, obsessed with Environmental Science, I wonder what I’m supposed to do if I want to study the relevant majors. Besides, as many courses are taught in English in Hong Kong, is it necessary for me to take some English tests? Furthermore, I wonder if it is possible for you to tell me something about accommodation. For example, where will I live in Hong Kong, on campus or outside? Finally, could you provide me with more details about the living costs, the fees as well as the scholarships?
Thank you for your time and attention. I’m looking forward to your early reply.
Yours,
Lihua
