Due to the comprehensiveness of China’s “reform and open” policies, economics plays an increasingly important role in the development of its global position. Though more and more companies built, management of companies cannot catch up with the development of the companies. Management is a burgeoning field in China, so I hope I can acquire more modern knowledge on management in England.

The roots of my strong interest in business can be traced back to my childhood. My father was among the first of China’s new breed of modern entrepreneurs. As a young girl, it was inspirational hearing about his business ventures, and meeting the varied and interesting circle of entrepreneurs. My mother was also involved in business as an accountant, helping him with simple calculations. And so it was early in my life that I hoped I, also, would someday be able to enter the realm of business.

With the time of growing up, I preferred reading books to satisfy my curiosity. I never ceased to contemplate over the questions I encountered. Subjects on business and management became a special fascination to me and my knowledge of psychology as well as interest in this field was increasing rapidly.

As a high school student in China, I had to concentrate on the College Entrance Examination (CEE), even so, books not related to the exams were never excluded from my life. Unfortunately when sitting in the exam in June, 2001, I was so nervous that I didn’t score well in the CEE exam. I enrolled in the department of Computer Science in Zhejiang College of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Any attempt to persuade myself to focus on my major turned out to be a failure at the beginning of my college life. After several terms, I realized that I would never be interested in being a programmer or an engineer. At that moment, I lost my direction and objectives.

My persistence in reading saved me from the dark situation. As a matter of fact, I enjoyed reading the books included Encyclopedia American, and some books about management by Peter F.Drucker. I began to notice something interesting: Why some companies can produce more than others? Why some company can sell more than others? Why some companies can build up but others cannot when facing the same difficulties?

With the questions in my mind, I started to read many relevant books. I was lucky to read the book “Jack: Straight from the Gut”by Jack Welch, in Which John A. Byrne makes a clear illustration that the management is important for a company. When I was a junior, I ran a bookshop by myself near my school. I should manage not only the finance in the shop but also the employees in my shop even made some strategies to enlarge the business in my shop to hold on the run the shop. From this, my interpersonal skills and the capacity in business has been greatly developed, definitely I was increasingly interested in what I was doing. By December, 2003, I had finally determined to take business management as my career instead of IT. To accumulate more relevant knowledge, I strived to gain more practical work experience in some big companies.

Fortunately, as a senior, I began by conducting an internship in the Architecture Company in Zhejiang Province. Over six months, I worked as an assistant of the manager to harmonize the relationship between the different departments in this company and to draft some management system, which broadened my perspective of management conditions and business performance in different industries. The experience showed me that management is much more important than that of I thought in big companies. After graduation, I continued my work in this company. In May, 2005, the company offered me an opportunity to participate in an training program held by a famous management school. Through in-depth discussions with teachers and students in the classes, they all encouraged me to pursue my future career in management field because of my intellectual ability and the brand new ideas I mentioned.

During the short period of training, I realized that pursuing a higher degree in management is a wise choice for me now. Lancaster, with its excellence in management, represents the perfect fit for my needs. In your challenging environment, I can build the required foundation of knowledge related to management to achieve my goals. I am firmly convinced that your admission will be my first step of success. With this in mind, I hereby submit my application, and await your favorable reply.

Dear _,

Studying at sixth form has made me realise that my favourite parts of each subject are based on the processes and sustainability of the environment. For my Product Design coursework, I was redesigning manufactured goods to be ‘greener’; making a lamp that was 80% more efficient and could also be broken down to be recycled. I prevailed in the organic module of AS Chemistry in which I learnt about the use of fossil fuels and pollutants. And in Maths, I concluded that the statistics module was the most rewarding because it showed me how the subject is integrated into almost everything; I was using methods from my statistics class to help me with my Geography coursework, in which I surveyed a river environment and how humans influence it – I took pleasure in wading through a river and the great sense of fulfilment to draw a conclusion from information I had gathered and processed myself.

I feel that this course will satisfy my curiosity about the world around us, and hope it will lead me to a career that aims to find ways to use the world’s resources in a sustainable way.

I have not missed an opportunity to get involved with extra-curricular activities; as I was walking through school to head home after some particular activities, I was often greeted by teachers making statements such as, ‘Are you still here?’ but I kept coming back.

Being part of every girl’s team available, and captaining some select games, meant that I set aside a lot of time to the cause; but this was no chore, I love the social side of sports because everyone involved has so much enthusiasm, which they portray in such an energetic manner. I joined clubs out of school, representing the South Bucks hockey team in the Thames Valley games and playing in an under sixteen’s netball club let me meet many new people that I shared a common interest with. I also became part of a non-competitive hockey club for older hockey players, where the training was more vigorous and my team mates were a lot wiser – I often had to decline invitations to the pub, purely because I was too young - but the harder training routines improved my self discipline that lead me to having new skills.

For games such as netball and rounders it is essential to cooperate and follow instructions; you have to play your part in the game, doing this has not only taught me how to be part of a team, but how to lead one too. I am now part of the sports council, representing the sixth-form, we are currently working to encourage younger pupils to attend after school sports clubs and are organising a sports day for year seven. I also represent sixth form in the school council where we discuss how to make school a better environment for everybody; the latest proposal was to introduce paper recycling.

My school holds a summer awards evening every year for the lower school, I acquired awards for my work in various subjects and one for service, these made me feel like quite the specialist and encouraged me to put more effort in and lend a hand to others. I was made a prefect in year eleven and am now a senior student, I was very eager to help in the smooth running of the school to give back a little of what I have been given in extra-curricular time and resources. Last year I helped out in a year nine maths class once a week, I felt a sense of satisfaction when students were able to use concepts that I had explained to them. Also last year, when GCSEs were over, I started to teach myself guitar. Starting off, it took self-motivation to keep on learning as things got harder, and fingerprints started to wear off, but now I am part of a band and I know that it was undoubtedly worth the effort.

I have always loved learning new fields of knowledge and I am looking forward to exploring them in more depth at a higher level. I see university as an opportunity to utilise better facilities and expertise, and I understand that I must contribute all I can and rise to all the challenges put to me.

Yours sincerely,

xuexila

Of all the characters that I've “ met” through books and movies, two stand out as people that I most want to emulate. They are Attacus Finch from To Kill A Mockingbird and Dr. Archibald “ Moonlight” Graham from Field of Dreams. They appeal to me because they embody what I strive to be. They are influential people in small towns who have a direct positive effect on those around them. I too, plan to live in a small town after graduating from college, and that positive effect is something I must give in order to be satisfied with my life.

Both Mr. Finch and Dr. Graham are strong supporting characters in wonderful stories. They symbolize good, honesty, and wisdom. When the story of my town is written I want to symbolize those things. The base has been formed for me to live a productive, helpful life. As an Eagle Scout I represent those things that Mr. Finch and Dr. Graham represent. In the child/adolescent world I am Mr.Finch and Dr. Graham, but soon I'll be entering the adult world, a world in which I'm not yet prepared to lead.

I'm quite sure that as teenagers Attacus Finch and Moonlight Graham often wondered what they could do to help others. They probably emulated someone who they had seen live a successful life. They saw someone like my grandfather, 40-year president of our hometown bank, enjoy a lifetime of leading, sharing, and giving. I have seen him spend his Christmas Eves taking gifts of food and joy to indigent families. Often when his bank could not justify a loan to someone in need, my grandfather made the loan from his own pocket. He is a real-life Moonlight Graham, a man who has shown me that characters like Dr. Graham and Mr. Finch do much much more than elicit tears and smiles from readers and movie watchers. Through him and others in my family I feel I have acquired the values and the burning desire to benefit others that will form the foundation for a great life. I also feel that that foundation is not enough. I do not yet have the sophistication, knowledge, and wisdom necessary to succeed as I want to in the adult world. I feel that Harvard, above all others, can guide me toward the life of greatness that will make me the Attacus Finch of my town.

Dear __,

Although Chinese woodblock printing has a tradition of2000years, Chineseprint artists have been absentfromthe international art scene for decades.Over the last years a few exhibitions about modern Chinese printmaking tookplace outside China, but some major exhibitions at such renowned museums likethe British Museum would probably lead to a breakthrough in the internationalart scene. Taking into consideration the growing appreciation of Chinese cultureand traditions, I am extremely interested in opportunity to expand myprofessional horizons to reinstate the well-deserved interest and approval ofthis ancient art. With this purpose, I was excited to learn about youruniversity, well-known for its high expertise in the subjects of creativity; andyour unique course, implementing a diverse range of subjects that contribute toan extensive list of skills. Therefore, I would very much like to be consideredas a strong candidate for you postgraduate programme.

My fondness for art and aptitude for rational thinking determined my choseof and devotion to the complex discipline of Chinese Printmaking, which includesa number of different techniques and processes like design, carving of the blockand printing. In comparison to Japanese, Chinese printmaking is rather composedfromseveral wooden blocks and, in an exclusive technique, would employ onlyspecial Chinese water-soluble inks and thin rice paper to produce a print thatlooks like a watercolor or a traditional Chinese painting. The success of such atechnique entirely depends on the exact humidity of the paper, which is hard toachieve even for an experienced artist. During 4 years of intensive studies, Inot only obtained knowledge in every aspect of this art but also learned aboutdigital reproduction of such images, computerized approach to modeling and evenweb site design.

During my undergraduate studies I played an active role in the university'slife by organizing miscellaneous events, parties, seminars and exhibition in aswell as outside the institution. The 3rd China Art Academy Exhibition, CulturalBridge Construction and Carrying Forward The Academic Arts – to name just a fewevents which included works of painting, calligraphy, design and photography. Ipersonally was selecting a place and art works for expositions, which trained myeye and evaluation skills. In addition, I was greatly involved in publicrelations of our university, predominantly by initiating and maintaining contactwith sponsors, which significantly enriched my communication skills. Having beena Student Union president for three years, I enhanced my leadership qualitiesand gained valuable experience in legality, administration and budgeting ofactivities and exhibitions. As an event manager, I not only coordinated groupsof students, working on different projects simultaneously, but also participatedin their careful recruitment.

The University also gave me a great opportunity to study English Languageas a part of my degree which, in particular, improved my grammar and writingskills. To develop my oral skills, I often interact with international exchangestudents who come to our university to study art of Chinese Printmaking. I alsoassisted professors in running their lectures for international students inEnglish. In preparation for my studies in the UK, I familiarized myself with theHarvard referencing system, and, currently, I am trying to learn how to write anacademic assay and dissertation.

In my spare time I enjoy swimming and reading biographical books aboutfamous people like Bill Gates, Vincent van Gogh, Munk and others. As a creativeperson, I like to play with visual space of my room, drawing and painting on thewalls and ceiling. My weakness is craftwork, therefore, my interior is decoratedwith various handmade objects, which I usually buy or make myself.

Your programme would greatly contribute to the weight of my undergraduatespeciality in Chinese Printmaking, allowing me to bring the significance andbeauty of this ancient art to the international level and effectively present itin the most innovative and creative way. Thus, the professional practice thatlies in the grounds of your course provides the essential functional preparationfor the career. In addition, I am intrigued by the opportunity to learn aboutcontentious issues and viewpoints in contemporary art and assess them inrelation to the previously gained knowledge and experience. In combination witha strong critical focus that your course offers, collaborative discussions andanalyses would provide an engaging approach to develop and apply my individualanalytical skills. In particular, I am looking forward to the sessions thatwould not only enable me to communicate my ideas clearly but also to presentinformation in appealing and captivating for audience way.

Taking into consideration my potentials and enthusiasm I believe I willmake a full use of the opportunities afforded to me at your university.

Yours sincerely,
