Did you know that a bowl of rice could save your iPod if you drop it in a swimming pool by accident? Or that the camera on your phone could tell you what's wrong with your TV remote control? The experts at Geek Squad (geelsquad.co.uk) have made a gadget(小机件) rescue guide. So, let’s take a look at some of their useful advice.
How to get more juice out of your phone battery?
If your battery goes dead but you need to get a number or send one last text, try warming it up. That may give you a tiny bit of power. Take the battery from the phone and rub it between your hands. Or warm it under your arm for a few minutes. Then try to start the phone – but use it quickly.
What to do if your gadget gets wet?
First, try drying it out with a vacuum cleaner. If a vacuum cleaner isn’t at hand, fill a pot or bowl with uncooked rice and put your gadget inside. The dry, uncooked rice will absorb all the water and, after a few hours, you should be able to use the gadget. Don’t forget to remove the battery and SIM card before you dry it.
What to do if your TV remote control stops working?
If replacing the batteries doesn’t work, get the camera function up on your phone and point the remote at the lens(镜头). When you press a button on the remote, if it's working then the glass bobble(小球) at the front of the remote will light up when you look at it on the screen of your phone. This is because the screen on a phone or digital camera picks up infrared rays (红外线), even though your eyes don't. If the glass bobble doesn’t light up, the remote is broken. If it does, the receiving device is broken.
21. If your cell phone falls into a sink, you can.
A. warm it up under your arm. B. put it into the uncooked rice.
C. press it with both of your hands. D. remove the battery after you dry it.
22. Why can a phone be used to prove the TV remote control works well?
A. Because it can receive infrared ray.
B. Because it can reflect infrared ray.
C. Because it can improve the TV remote control.
D. Because it can picture the TV remote control.
23. In which section of a newspaper can we possibly read this text?
A. Entertainment B. Finance C. Culture D. Life
B
CHICAGO--- Airplanes are polluters. They're as noisy as a rock concert, and send out poisons into the air as well as dump millions of pounds of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere every year. By 2050, emissions (排放) from planes are expected to become one of the largest contributors to global warming.
That’s why researchers at MIT are designing a completely new type of airplane for NASA that will enable greener airplanes to take flight before 2050.
The 180-passenger D “double bubble” series was designed to replace the Boeing 737 class aircraft, the most popular jetliner in the world right now. The design is called a “double bubble” because it uses two partial cylinders (气缸) placed side by side. Those two cylinders create a wider structure that looks like two soap bubbles joined together.
In today’s commercial airplanes, air flows directly into the engines located on the plane’s wings. That high-speed air flow drags on the plane, and requires more fuel to overcome the design inefficiency.
MIT’s design changes all that. By moving the engines to the plane’s tail, they take in slower moving air present in the wake of the fuselage (机舱). Less drag means less fuel is needed to get the plane the same distance.
Burning less fuel can help passengers’ wallet as well as the environment. The environmental implications of saving energy are as just as clear: the fewer emissions that planes spout(喷射) into the atmosphere, the healthier our planet.
But for passengers, we still have a couple of decades to wait before any of these planes make it onto the runway. NASA’s goal is to make sure the planes that MIT has designed can take off by 2035.
24. The best feature of the double bubble flight is that _____.
A. it will make no noise B. it will hold more passengers
C. it is designed to save fuel D. it needs no runways to take off
25. Which of the following is NOT true according to the text?
A. Emission from planes are contributing the most to the global warming
B. Airplanes are very noisy for the environment
C. MIT’s new design will save passengers’ money
D. It's expected that NASA’s goal will be realized by the year 2035.
26. What’s the main idea of the text?
A. Here is Boeing 737's terminal B. Researchers are designing greener aircraft
C. Passengers will enjoy lower prices D. Airlines attract passengers with new planes
27. The passage comes from a ____.
A. News report B. Science journal C. Travel guide D. Environment magazine

I made a promise to myself on the way down to the vacation beach cottage. For two weeks I would try to be a loving husband and father. Totally loving, unconditionally.
The idea had come to me as I listened to a talk on my car radio. The speaker was quoting a Biblical passage about husbands and their wives. Then he went on to say, “Love is an act of will. A person can choose to love.” To myself, I had to admit that I had been a selfish husband. Well, for two weeks that would change.
And it did. Right from the moment I kissed Evelyn at the door and said, “That new yellow sweater looks great on you.” “Oh, Tom, you noticed”, she said, surprised and pleased. Maybe a little puzzled. After the long drive, I wanted to sit and read. Evelyn suggested a walk on the beach. I started to refuse, but then I thought, “Evelyn’s been alone here with the kids all week and now she wants to be alone with me.” We walked on the beach while the children flew their kites.
So it went. Two weeks of not calling the Wall Street firm where I am a director; a visit to the shell museum though I usually hate museums. Relaxed and happy, that’s how the whole vacation passed. I made a new promise to keep on remembering to choose love.
There was one thing that went wrong with my experiment, however. Evelyn and I still laugh about it today. On the last night at our cottage, preparing for bed, Evelyn stared at me with the saddest expression.
“What’s the matter?” I asked her.
“Tom,” she said in a voice filled with distress, “ I don’t?”
“What do you mean?”
“Well…that checkup I had several weeks ago…our doctor…did he tell you something about me? Tom, you’ve been so good to me…am I dying?”
It took a moment for it all to be understood. Then I burst out laughing.
“No, honey,” I said, wrapping her in my arms. “You’re not dying; I’m just starting to live.”
28. From the story we may infer that Tom drove to the beach cottage ______.
A. with his family B. with Evelyn
C. alone D. with his children
29. During the two weeks on the beach, Tom showed more love to his wife because ______.
A. he was determined to be a good husband
B. he had made a lot of money in his Wall Street firm
C. she looked lovely in her new clothes
D. the doctor said his wife was seriously ill
30. What does the underlined “one thing” refer to?
A. He praised her sweater, which puzzled her.
B. She insisted on visiting a museum, which he hated.
C. He knew something about her illness but didn’t tell her.
D. He was so good to her that she thought she must be dying.
31. By saying “I’m just starting to live,” Tom means that ______.
A. he is just beginning to understand the real meaning of life
B. he is just beginning to enjoy life as a loving husband
C. he lived an unhappy life before and is now starting to change
D. he is beginning to feel regret for what he did to his wife before
D
Anyone who has experienced the joy of driving through a rainstorm with the sunroof (天窗) open understands how airflow around the moving vehicles can keep him dry despite the exposure. Now a similar principle is being employed to create an umbrella that protects people from the rain using nothing more than an invisible air force field.
Air Umbrella, developed by a Chinese company and recently funded by Kickstarter, uses forced air rather than fabric to create a protective canopy that keeps people from getting wet in the rain.
It’s a clever concept and designers have done a good job of answering several questions about the product. For instance, the sound generated by the device is minimal, especially when compared to the pitter-patter of the falling rain. It can create a protective canopy wide enough for two people to fit under and it performs well even in the heavy rain. The air shield (防护) can be cut through by high winds, but given that regular umbrellas typically fold over in similar windy conditions, the air umbrella is still an upgrade.
A few concerns do remain, however. For instance, the battery life is only about 15-30 minutes depending on the model, so you’ll still want to walk briskly to your next destination when it’s raining. Also, while the air shield might keep the rain away from you, it’s likely to splash all that blown-away water onto anyone else like a sprinkler (洒水车). So the device might draw the ire of anyone else walking with you, or any helpless bystanders.
There are currently three different types to choose from if you’re interested in investing. Air Umbrella-A is the lightest model, and is apparently designed specifically for females, according to the Chinese developers. It is about 12 inches in length and weighs a little over a pound, and it runs for 15 minutes per charge. Air Umbrella-B measures nearly 20 inches long and weighs 1.7 pounds, and lasts 30 minutes per charge. Finally, Air Umbrella-C also lasts 30 minutes, but is scalable between 20 and 32 inches depending on your needs.
32. Why does the author mention a special driving experience in the first paragraph?
A. To introduce the topic of the passage. B. To explain the need for an umbrella.
C. To share a feeling with the readers. D. To prove a theory to the readers.
33. The Air Umbrella fails to work when ______.
A. there is little rain B. there is no wind C. it rains heavily D. the wind is strong
34. How does the author present concerns about the Air Umbrella?
A. By giving figures. B. By giving examples.
C. By making experiments. D. By making comparisons.
35. The underlined word “ire” in the 4th paragraph probably means ______.
A. attention B. doubt C. curiosity D. anger

How to Care for Your Ears?
Ears not only let us hear, but they also play a role in maintaining our balance, which is vital to our ability to function in daily life. Yet, we ignore them. We can’t even see our ears, except in a mirror. We take for granted what they do for us day in and day out—until we notice something’s wrong, such as when an earache strikes or when we start having to ask people to repeat what they say. 36
◆Clean your ear with a washcloth—covered finger only.
Never put anything inside your ear canal, including cotton swabs (药签). 37
◆Leave earwax(耳垢) alone.
Wax is your ear’s way of eliminating(消除) anything foreign that gets into the ear canal. 38 If you find you have too much earwax, use a few drops of earwax remover(去除剂) in the canal. After a few minutes, wash the ear with warm water.
◆Avoid noisy places.
Rock concerts and construction sites are just a few places that frequently have noise levels that can damage hearing. Any place where you have to shout to be heard should be avoided.
◆ 39
Be careful not to play MP3 too loud, especially if using earphone.
◆Be careful with illness and medications.
Respiratory (呼吸的) illnesses should be treated to avoid their spread to the ears. Certain medications can damage hearing, so follow the directions carefully before taking them.
See your doctor if you suffer from sudden hearing loss or hear noises in your head. 40
A.Most people don’t need to clean wax out of their ears.
B.In such case, go to see a doctor as soon as possible.
C.These can be symptoms of a serious illness which needs to be treated.
D.This article will show you how to care for your ears.

I’m Li Hua from Class One, Senior three. As far as I am concerned, I believe to teach English for pupils from Chen Xi Hope School will be good for both the primary-school students and high-school student tutor, which thus will result in substantial social benefits.
I think I am qualified for being the pupils’ English coach, because I have good character, being independent in life and proficient in English. That’s why I apply for the position; I hope I can join the instructive activity.
My plan for coaching the pupils is to teach them by listening, speaking, reading and writing. What’s more important is to stimulate their interests in learning English as a foreign language, creating a good learning environment. I hope you can offer the opportunity.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
