  第二节 完形填空 (共20小题;每小题1分,满分20分)

People often ask me how I write with four children.

More often than not, my stories are pieced together, written, and edited in a series of 36 moments. If I’m working while the kids are home, I have the added 37 of tuning out their chaos. I’ll write and write until I fall under a spell(着迷), and just when I was getting 38 , it happens—Camille will crawl(爬,爬行)into my office 39 a big smile—and a smelling diaper (尿布).

I wish I had a daily 40 , a solid time no one can interrupt, but I don’t. I may go days or even weeks without writing. I hate these 41 , but much as I like to believe the world needs my writing, my daughters need me much more. So for now I write when I can. While this arrangement works, I sometimes 42 how productive I’d be if my life wasn’t stop-and-go. With time on my side, I could be a writing machine, 43 what would normally take me months.

This leads me to a question I find 44 to all parents: Do kids hold back or 45 our dreams? Children are needy by nature, and regardless of how much 46 we show them, they want more. By the time we tend to them, we’re tired out—and 47 in the mood to follow our dream. They push our personal pleasures 48 and slow us down, making tortoises out of hares. On the other hand, children add a richness to our lives that I believe inspires better work, thus 49 for time we lose. As a writer, I don’t find inspiration sitting at my computer. 50 , I find it when I’m out living, and the 51 I take because of my children—going to the ballpark, birthday parties, even doctor visits—put me in 52 with people who often set off new ideas. Many ideas arise through 53 conversation, which can 54 me like thunder. Immediately, I’ll make a mental note, knowing that someday I’ll use that 55 in a story.

  37.A. challenge B. courage C. instruction D. priority

  38.A. direction B. inspiration C. invention D. application

  39.A.wearing B. dressing C. waving D. setting

Who do you feel closer to — your mom or your dad?

In almost every culture in the world, mothers are thought to be more important than fathers during children’s development and more likely to build strong bonds with their children.

This belief had existed for a long time until scientists started asking a new question: What do fathers contribute to their children besides their genes? They must mean something, or they would have disappeared from children’s lives at an earlier time in evolution(进化). So, a new science of fatherhood was born.

American journalist Paul Raeburn collected the discoveries over the years and put them into his new book, Do Fathers Matter? What Science Is Telling Us About the Parent We’ve Overlooked, hoping to make people better see the many ways that fathers influence their children.

For example, Ronald Preston Rohner, a scientist at the University of Connecticut, US, spent several years studying how being accepted or rejected by parents influences children’s personality. He found that children who are accepted by both their parents are usually independent and hold a positive worldview while those who feel turned down by either parent may turn out hostile and negative.

Melanie Horn-Mallers, a psychologist at California State University, found that sons who have happy memories of their fathers are better able to handle day-to-day stress after growing up.

Another study, by Richard Koestner at McGill University, Canada, focused on how children develop empathy(同理心). After looking at various possible factors, Koestner found one to be more important than others — how much time their fathers spend with them.

“We were amazed to find that how affectionate parents were with their children didn’t matter much to the development of empathy,” said Koestner. “And we were astounded at how strong the father’s influence was.”

mIndeed, evidence shows that fathers make unique contributions to their children’s happiness. However, that doesn’t mean that children in families without fathers are definitely going to become failures. Just look at US President Barack Obama. He is a great example of what can be achieved by people who grow up in single-mother households.

  58. It’s been discovered by scientists that children feeling refused by their parents ______.

  A. often shape their own ideas B. are less likely to be successful

  C. usually manage to live with stress D. tend to hold negative worldviews

  59. Based on the passage, the development of empathy in children is influenced most by ______.

  A. how happy they are with their fathers

  B. how affectionate they are with their parents

  C. how much time their fathers spend with them

  D. how well their fathers get on with their mothers

  60. The underlined word “astounded” in Paragraph 8 is closest in meaning to ______.

  A. surprised B. delighted C. confused D. upset

61.What is the main purpose of the passage?

  A. To find out why children have better bonds with their mothers.

  B. To report on a book studying how fathers influence their children.

  C. To tell how different in the influences of mothers and fathers on children.

  D. To explain what influences children’s personality most during their development.

Overcoming feelings of defeat is not only possible, but very important as we want to prevent the “other side” of being bipolar(两极性的) getting you down. Such feelings and thoughts can cause a major depressive episode(抑郁阶段);so we must look at the events and possibly poor decisions and impulse behaviors of the manic(狂躁的)episode from a balanced and objective view. We can then correct and improve our prevention and action plans to prevent another manic episode from being caused in the future.

There are two areas that you will want to focus on while recovering from a manic episode. The first is self-education. And the second is the education of your family and friends---educating your friends and family. There is no better time than the present for this. Consider setting an appointment with your therapist(精神治疗家) and asking your most trusted family member, your spouse or a very trusted friend, to come with you to an appointment. During this appointment, you will have your therapist share with your loved one to receive first-hand education about your condition and they will clearly know that you need support and understanding. This is beyond simple psycho-education about bipolar disorder and what bipolar disorder is. Indeed, your family, loved ones, spouse and friends, will benefit from learning this and I encourage you to encourage them to attend family support groups where they will learn more and more. but in addition to this, appointments with your therapist can make a huge difference. Over time, you might even be able to persuade your family to get involved in family therapy with you.

Remember, your past does not define you. Your mental illness does not define who you are as a human being. You were born with innate (先天的)gifts and talents. You are a good human being and you deserve to be treated as such. So, you must also treat yourself with love, respect and understanding. Often, it is the sufferer who is hardest on himself or herself. Check your negative thoughts and thoughts of self-judgment and criticism, and use your positive thinking skills to change those. Get back into the world, volunteer and visit friends.

  62. What is the “other side” of being bipolar?

  A. Depressive and manic episodes. B. Ideas and feelings in your inner heart.

  C. The positive aspects of your emotions. D. A balanced and objective view of point.

  63. What is the purpose of the education of your family and friends?

  A. To tell them that your situation is not awful at all.

  B. To ask your therapist to persuade them to be strong.

  C. To let them know your situation and help you get through it.

  D. To beg them not to give you up or look down on you.

64.What does the last paragraph mainly tell us to do?

  A. Try to get back into your familiar world.

  B. Believe in yourself and reduce your stress.

  C. Participate in the volunteer work actively.

  D. Believe that there will be no difficulty with the help of friends.

  D

We have all heard the expression: "Remember to stop and smell the roses." But, how often do we really take time out of our hectic(繁忙的) fast-paced lives to notice the world around us?

I am as guilty as anyone of tuning out the world in this manner, especially when I am driving on California's overcrowded streets. A short time ago, however, I witnessed an event that showed me how being wrapped up in my own little world has kept me from being fully aware of the bigger world picture around me.

I was driving to a business appointment and, as usual, I was planning in my mind what I was going to say. I came to a very busy crossroads where the stoplight had just turned red. "All right," I thought to myself, "I can beat the next light if I race ahead of the pack ."My mind and car were in auto pilot, ready to go when suddenly my trance(出神;发呆) was broken by an unforgettable sight. A young couple, both blind, were walking arm-in-arm across this busy crossroads with cars whizzing by in every direction. The man was holding the hand of a little boy , while the woman was clutching a baby sling to her chest, obviously carrying a child. Each of them had a white cane extended, searching for clues to navigate them across the crossroads.

Initially I was moved. They were overcoming what I felt was one of the most feared handicaps-blindness. "Wouldn't it be terrible to be blind?" I thought. Without realizing the danger they were in, they were walking right the path of oncoming cars. I was frightened for them because I didn't know if the other drivers understood what was happening.

As I watched from the front line of traffic (I had the best seat in the house), I saw a miracle unfold before my eyes. Every car in every direction came to a simultaneous stop. I never heard the screech of brakes or even the peep of a car horn. Nobody even yelled, "Get out of the way!" Everything froze. In that moment, time seemed to stand still for this family. Amazed , I looked at the cars around me to verify(核实;证实) that we were all seeing the same thing, I noticed that everyone's attention was also fixed on the couple. Never skipping a beat, the couple adjusted their course as they followed the coaching. Trusting their white canes and the calls from some concerned citizens, they made it to the other side of the road. As they arrived at the curb, one thing struck me-they were still arm-in-arm .I was taken aback by the emotionless expressions on their faces and judged that they had no idea what was really going on around them. Yet I immediately sensed the sighs of relief exhaled by everyone stopped at that intersection(十字路口).

As I glanced into the cars around me, the driver on my right was mouthing the words "oh, did you see that?!" The driver to the left of me was saying, "I can't believe it!" I think all of us were deeply moved by what we had just witnessed. Here were human beings stepping outside themselves for a moment to help four people in need.

I have reflected back on this situation many times since it happened and have learned several powerful lessons from it. Take time to look around and really see what is going on in front of you right now. Do this and you will realize that this moment is all there is, more importantly, this moment is all that you have to make a difference in life.

As I drove away from that busy intersection, I did so with more awareness of life and compassion for others than I had arrived there with. Since then I have made the decision to really see life as I go about my daily activities and use my God-given talents to help others less fortunate.

Do yourself a favor as you walk through life: Slow down and take the time to really see. Take a moment to see what is going on around you right now, right where you are. You may be missing something wonderful.

  65. Which of the following words can best describe the viewer's feelings when seeing the blind cross the street?

  A. Relieved; Guilty; Nervous B. Amazed; Nervous; Relieved

  C. Frightened; Moved; Guilty D. Frightened; Regretful; Relieved

  66. Why did the viewer often reflect back on the scene?

  A. He wanted to stop and smell the rose again.

  B. He learned powerful lessons from it.

  C. The scene left a great impression on him.

  D. The couple crossed the street without assistance.

  67. By saying "Remember to stop and smell the roses", the author intends to______.

  A. indicate he is busy B. make himself relaxed

  C. notice the world around D. find the beauty of life

  68. What does the underlined sentence in paragraph 6 mean?

  A. All the cars stopped suddenly.

  B. All the cars stopped one after another.

  C. The cars stopped at the same time.

  D. The cars gathered from different directions.

  69. From the story, we can draw a conclusion that .

  A. joint efforts do make a difference

  B. good manners never go out of fashion

  C. drivers observe the social order strictly

  B. To tell a story about the blind man crossing crossroads.

  C. To remind drivers to drive slowly for their own safety.

  D. To persuade people to enjoy a wonderful moment in life.

  第II卷 (非选择题,共35分)

  第四部分 任务型阅读(共10小题,每小题1分,共10分)

Could your cellphone give you cancer? Whether it could or not, some people are worrying about the possibility that phones, powerlines and wi-fi could be responsible for a range of illnesses, from rashes to brain tumors.

For example, Camilla Rees, 48, a former investment banker in the US, moved out of her apartment in San Francisco because of the radiation coming from next door. Rees told the Los Angeles Times that when her neighbors moved in and installed a wi-fi router she lost her ability to think clearly. I would wake up dizzy in the morning. I fall to the floor. I had to leave to escape that nightmare,” she said. Since then, she’s been on a campaign against low-level electromagnetic fields, or EMFs(低频电磁场).

And she’s not alone. Millions of people say they suffer from headaches, depression, nausea and rashes when they’re too close to cellphones or other sources of EMFs.

Although the World Health Organization has officially declared that EMFs seem to pose little threat, governments are still concerned. In fact, last April, the European Parliament called for countries to take steps to reduce exposure to EMFs. The city of San Francisco and the state of Maine are currently considering requiring cancer-warning labels on cellphones.

If these fears are reasonable, then perhaps we should all be worried about the amount of time we spend talking on our phones or plugging into wi-fi hotpots.

Some say there is evidence to support the growing anxieties. David Carpenter, a professor of environmental health sciences at the University at Albany, in New York, thinks there’s a greater than 95% chance that power lines can cause childhood leukemia. Also there’s a greater than 90% chance that cellphones can cause brain tumors.

But others believe these concerns are unreasonable paranoia (猜疑). Dr. Martha Linet, the head of radiation epidemiology at the US National Cancer Institute, has looked at the same research as Carpenter but has reached a different conclusion. “I don’t support warning labels for cellphones,” said Linet. “We don’t have the evidence that there’s much danger.”

Studies so far suggest a weak connection between EMFs and illness — so weak that it might not exist at all. A multinational investigation of cellphones and brain cancer, in 13 countries outside the US, has been underway for several years. It’s funded in part by the European Union, in part by a cellphone industry group.

According to Robert Park, a professor of physics at the University of Maryland in the US, the magnetic waves aren’t nearly powerful enough to destroy DNA, which is now known threats, such as UV rays and X-rays, cause cancer.

Perhaps it’s just psychological. Some experts find that the electro-sensitivity syndrome seems to be similar to chemical sensitivity syndrome, which is a condition that’s considered to be psychological.

Whether EMFs are harmful or not, a break in the countryside, without the cellphone, would probably be good for all of us.

  81.阅读下面的短文,然后按照要求写一篇150词左右的英语短文。

What can you do when you are unhappy? If you want to let out your anger or pressure by breaking things, you just do. Now a school in Nanjing has built a “stress wall” to help students who feel unhappy due to heavy schoolwork or for other reasons.

The leader of the school said the idea of a stress wall started when footprints were found on some newly painted walls and some school windows were broken.

“These things happen because some students feel lots of pressure from their studies or because they don’t get along well with other students. When under stress, the body gets ready to either run or fight and becomes very nervous. Hitting the wall can help relax the body and take away stress,” he said.

“Tests and homework make me sad,” said a junior girl, “I can’t wait to hit the wall. It will help me a lot with my problems.” However, another girl student who wouldn’t give her name said,” The wall won’t help because it can’t talk,” and she added,” I need to talk to someone when I’m sad.”

  81. One possible version(参考范文):

The passage conveys to us that to help students with stress, a school built a “stress wall” for students to relax, towards which students hold different opinions.

Nowadays, students are under great pressure, mainly coming from their school work as well as peer relationship.

As far as I am concerned, building a stress wall is not appropriate. For one thing, even if students punch the wall heavily, the true stress in the bottom of their hearts can not be let out. For another, this may lead to the results of solving a problem with violence of fixing a bad temper, which has bad effects on their health growth.

In order to decrease our stress, here are my suggestions. To begin with, we can design more outdoor activities for students to get rid of the stress. What’s more, it is strongly suggested that we can take part in some sports events, which can surely help students out of stress and improve their health at the same time. All in all, only when we let out the stress properly can we live a happy school life.
