  81. One possible version:

The two selections clearly reveal that more and more teenagers engage in illegal drug abuse, which has become a growing social phenomenon. It poses a big challenge to the world’s fight against drugs.

Quite a few factors give rise to the problem. For one thing, some teenagers take drugs illegally because they are curious or want to rebel against families. For another, some try them just on account of peer pressure. Drug abuse has a dangerous effect on teenagers. Drugs affect teens’ ability to concentrate on their study and work. Besides, drug abuse can cause both emotional and physical problems, and even suck the life right out of a person.

To protect teenagers from illegal drugs, the government should attach importance to safety education. We should make teenagers realize the risk and consequence of taking drugs by putting more safety education into textbooks. Meanwhile, parents’ supervision and communication play a key role in keeping teenagers away from drugs.

  48. 此处update sb. on sth.

  Text 1

W: I am sorry to disturb you on Sunday. Could you come over here to meet our boss?

M: OK. I start at once. I will be in our office in a few minutes.

  Text 2

M: Is there any chance of my borrowing your typewriter?

  W: For how long?

M: Until the end of the week.

W: Yes, I guess that would be all right.

  Text 3

  W: Any rain?

M: No, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it rained tomorrow.

W: I wouldn’t either. It’s been looking like rain for several days.

  Text 4

M: Whenever we meet, Mary pretends not to see me.

W: I don’t think it’s because she hasn’t got over her anger. She’s having a bad time at work nowadays.

  Text 5

M: What did you order for me?

W: Black coffee. What do we do now?

M: Let me finish this coffee and then we will go to Gate 5. They’re announcing our flight.

  Text 6

M: What can I do for you, madam?

W: I’d like to buy two boxes of Chinese mooncakes.

M: All right. We have the Guangdong style and the Suzhou style. Which do you want?

  W: The Suzhou style.

  M: OK. Anything else?

W: Let me see. Ah, yes! I want some bananas.

M: Sorry, bananas are out of season now. But we have some good oranges. They are just in from the country.

W: Good. I’ll take these ten oranges. How much would that come to?

M: Just a moment, please. Forty yuan for the mooncakes and seven yuan for the oranges. That’ll be forty-seven yuan in all.

W: Here is fifty yuan, sir.

M: Thank you. Here’s your change, madam.

  W: Thank you. Good-bye.

  Text 7

M: Jenny, you look terrible. What’s eating you?

W: Don’t bother me! And it’s not your fault. Far away from me please.

M: So, what’s the problem? Speak out and we may help each other. About the examination?

W: I drew a blank on the test.

M: No kidding! Didn’t you study for it?

W: I did, but nothing was clear during the test.

M: That’s too bad, anyway. I’m sure things will turn around next term.

W: I’m thinking of dropping out. I’m serious about this.

M: You can’t do that, Jenny! Come on, let’s talk about it. You are clever but recently you spend less time in studying because of your part-time job.

W: I know but I have to. My dad has been fired and I should help to support my family.

  Text 8

M: What made you decide on this type of occupation?

W: Oh, to tell you the truth, I love the sky. When I was a child, I imagined flying into the blue sky some day. Now, I think the day has come. My dream will come true. And I like travelling very much and I enjoy working with people.

M: Can you make yourself understood in English without too much difficulty?

W: Yes, I think I am quite fluent in English. I got the certificate of the Secondary English Training last month.

M: Do you know what the responsibilities are for a stewardess?

W: The main responsibility is to make the passengers relaxed and happy during the flight. And good service is also important.

M: Are you in good health?

W: I just had a complete physical examination and I am in top condition.

M: Have you had any nursing experience?

W: Yes, I have two years of nursing experience, and now I am working as a nurse in a hospital.

M: How tall are you? What about your eyesight?

W: My height is one meter and sixty-eight centimeters. I never had any vision problems.

  Text 9

W: I’m going over to the gym. I want to do some running.

M: Why don’t you run outside?

W: Are you kidding? Do you know how cold it is today?

M: Yeah, I suppose. I guess it isn’t healthy to run in this weather.

W: No, it’s not. Not at all. I’d probably freeze my lungs.

M: Wait for me a minute. I’ll go over to the gym too.

  W: You?

M: Yes, why not? Just let me get my gym clothes together.

  W: I didn’t know you could exercise.

M: What do you mean by that? Everyone can exercise!

W: Yeah, I know. But you? I always thought you were only good at lifting beer bottles to your mouth.

M: No, not at all. I was on the swimming team in high school. And I’d like to do some weight training. They have decent equipment at that gym.

W: You’re going to lift weights? Hah!

M: Are you laughing at me?

W: I’m sorry. I just can’t imagine you lifting weights.

M: Maybe not. But I want to start. I need to get in shape.

  Text 10

If they could, your kids might sit around all day doing nothing but watch TV. This is not good for their health or their intellectual development. Parents of lazy kids should choose some rules that motivate the kids to get things done.

It’s easy for kids to put off doing homework when there are so many other more interesting things to do. Set a house rule that your child has to do his homework first. If he has a lot of work, it is fine for him to take a short break, but his focus should still be on getting his work done.

Your lazy child might leave his items around the house. It may not seem like a lot to him—his jacket sitting on the chair, a book on the coffee table and breakfast dishes still on the table—but they really add up to an untidy home. Set a rule that he must always put his items back in the proper place.

When your child is watching TV or playing video games, he’s not doing something else more active or creative. Children should watch no more than one to two hours of educational, non-violent programming per day. A house rule that limits the amount of TV and video games will force the child to participate in other activities.
