Allan goes everywhere with Birgitta Anderson, a 54-year-old secretary. He moves around her office at work and goes shopping with her. ''Most people don't seem to mind Allan,” says Birgitta, who thinks he is wonderful. “He’s my fourth child,” she says. She may think of him and treat him that way, buying his food, paying his health bills and his taxes. But in fact Allan is a dog.

Birgitta and Allan live in Sweden, a country where everyone is expected to lead an orderly life according to rules laid down by the government, which also provides a high level of care for its people. This level of care costs money.

People in Sweden pay taxes on everything, so aren’t surprised to find that owning a dog means yet more taxes. Some people are paying as much as 500 Swedish kronor in taxes a year for the right to keep their dog, which is spent by the government on hospitals and sometimes medical treatment for a dog that falls ill. However, most such treatment is expensive, so owners often decide to pay health and even life insurance for their dog.

In Sweden dog owners must pay for any damage their dog does. A Swedish Kennel Club official explains what this means: If your dog runs out on the road and get hit by a passing car, you as the owner, have to pay for any damage done to the car, even if your dog has been killed in the accident.

The musical instruments of the future may be right in front of your eyes and on the tables, walls and windows around you. This might come true if we use the right hardware and have a little imagination.

In Switzerland, a team of scientists and artists are working together on a new technology that can transform almost any surface into a musical instrument. The technology is called MUTE, short for Multi-Touch Everywhere. Using MUTE, a person can use a computer to translate taps on different parts of a table or a wall into different sounds.

For example, you may record and save different sounds on a computer…anything from a drum of a piano to clapping hands or a yell. Then, you can program your computer or play one of these recorded sounds whenever you tap a certain spot on a table or a wall. The left side of a table might play drum beats, the right side a melody on a piano. If you tap the two sides at the same time, you'll hear both sounds come together in a new song. The system also needs to use cameras and lasers to see where you’ve tapped on the table.

“The programmed surface doesn't even have to be solid - it can float right in front of you.” explains musician and MUTE developer Crevoiser. “It can even work in the air.” He says, “Imagine, for example, a virtual pianos floating in front of you.” How wonderful that would be!
