Mary Krupa became friends with the grey squirrels during her first week at Penn State, after spotting them running around and wondering what they would look like with tiny hats on their heads. Today, everyone at the university knows her as the “Squirrel Girl”.
Mary started bringing them food, and gradually they began to trust her. She managed to put a hat on a squirrel and take a picture. She posted similar photos on Facebook. The response was greatly positive, and before long Mary and her squirrels became an Internet hit.
Growing up in a neighborhood outside State College, Mary was always fond of birds and animals around her home, but she didn’t chat with people very much. She was later diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome, but the squirrels changed that. “The squirrels are actually a good way to break the ice, because I’ll be sitting here patting a squirrel and other people will come over and we’ll just start like feeding the squirrels together and chatting about them,” she said. “I am a lot more outgoing.”
And in case you’ re wondering how Mary is able to get the squirrels to do what she wants for her photos, it has a lot to do with food. For example, whenever she wants them to hold or play with something, she puts peanut butter on the stage properly, and they’ll grab it. But getting to that part took a while. In the beginning, she would throw peanuts up the trees on campus and invite the squirrels to come down and get them, but they hesitated to approach her. Last week, a 15-year-old student became a hero. Zaevion Dobson, threw himself on top of three girls as gang(黑帮) members released a lot of bullets for a shooting the day before. Dobson traded his life for the girls’ safety; he died after being struck by a bullet.

We’d like to live in a world where such heroic tendencies are common, but if they were common, then they wouldn’t be heroic, would they? But surely we’d like to live in a world where selfless heroism is more common. Unfortunately, courage and bravery to protect others seem obsolete to many people today.
Primary school students are told they can’t play tag(捉人游戏)because it involves touching. College students cry for safe spaces. At Oberlin, even ethnic restaurant food is too much to bear. These days, it seems, we are less likely to praise heroism than victimhood. With that sort of culture, people like Zaevion Dobson seem even more admirable.
Yet the world, as recent events show, still calls for heroism on a regular basis. And it seems to me a society that praises heroism, rather than victimhood, is a society that is likely to have more heroes than victims. Perhaps we should consider making some changes.

A new “Rembrandt” painting created in Amsterdam is making headlines around the world. However, the authentic-looking masterpiece is not the work of the 17th-century Dutch artist. It is a new painting that uses technology to imitate Rembrandt’s technique so perfectly that it could easily be mistaken for one created by the great artist himself.
It took a team 18 months to complete the clever fake. Called the “Next Rembrandt,” it uses data and technology to bring one of the greatest artists of all time back to life.
The team began by collecting data from the Dutch artist’s 346 paintings to help them imitate his technique, choice of color, structure, and topic, as closely as possible. Once ready, the individual elements were put together to form the face and the bust (半身像)in the same size as the original paintings created by the Dutch artist. The team then used technology to add depth to the 2D image. Once ready, a 3D printer was used to bring the “Next Rembrandt” back to life — a portrait of a white male between 30 and 40 years old, wearing black clothes, a white collar, and hat.
An expert in the team says the goal of the project was to start a discussion about how data and technology could become an essential part of the art world. While the project did receive some criticism from a few experts, many art historians including Rembrandt experts were incredibly supportive. They even acted as advisors to ensure that the “Next Rembrandt” would be a masterpiece — one that even the famous Dutch artist would be proud of.
Born in Amsterdam in 1606, Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn is one of the world’s most famous artists. The productive painter was famous for his portraits thanks to his ability to grab realistic emotions. Unfortunately, like many artists of his time, Rembrandt’s talents were not recognized during this lifetime. The artist died penniless in 1669, after suffering through many years of hardship.
