影片《霍比特人：意外之旅》与《指环王》有着千丝万缕的联系，这让广大指环王迷十分激动。在多年之后看到《指环王》原班人马重聚一堂，再会中土世界，无疑是让指环王迷走进电影院的最大动力。从成片效果来看，这部166分钟的史诗级电影对指环王迷来说肯定是再一次重温旧梦之旅，矮人国、精灵国和中土大地壮美依旧。
影片尽管使用了3D技术，然而在CG的创意和制作方面，较之《指环王》系列并没有太大的提高。从总体效果来看，甚至比不上《阿凡达》。三部《指环王》都有独具巧思的电脑特效，比如《魔戒现身》中如万马奔腾的洪水，《双塔奇谋》里面的树人，《国王归来》中的幽灵军队等等。而《霍比特人：意外之旅》的特效制作，基本重复以往三部曲的一些创意。而新加入的创意，如地下的淋巴发炎半兽人和无厘头斗殴石头人等很难让观众眼前一亮，呈现效果不尽如人意。只有褐袍巫师驾驶的兔子拉爬犁充满了童趣，算是个不错的看点
