  all ears 竖起耳朵,全神贯注地听

  May: But the thing is that he has everyone of the company eating out of his hand(把每个人搞得服服帖帖的). When I called on him(去看他) last week, the happened to have a meeting. He was giving them a pep talk(鼓舞士气的讲话) and they were all ears at him. Everyone seemed to lend a willing ear to(洗耳恭听) what he was saying.

  May: He's really something(真有他的). He must have got the hang of(找到窍门) dealing with people.

  May: Yes, he has. He's able to keep everyone on his toes(使每一个人忙个不停).

  Jim: I must go and have a talk with him. I need to pick his brains(请教).

  May: Let me give him a buzz(挂个电话) and see if he'd like to see you.

  注意:当它的后面跟随宾语时,在all ears的后面常用介词at连接宾语。例如:The kids were all ears at the old man. 孩子们全神贯注地听老人给他们讲话。

  Ask for it 自找麻烦, 自讨苦吃

  Jim: Do you know what happened?

  May: Not an inkling(一点也不知道). What’s happened?

  Jim: My girlfriend gave her boss a good piece of her mind(好好教训某人一顿).

  May: He asked for it(他是自找). I suppose.

  Jim: Yeah. She is really something(真了不起).

  May: But she will be in trouble.

  Jim: No. she got the goods on(抓到把柄) him.

  May: Do you think the boss will throw in the towel(服输)?

  Jim: He has to grin and bear it(强作笑脸).

  注:Ask for...表示“要求得到某物”。ask for it是个固定搭配,主要用于口语情景之中,意思是“自找麻烦”。比如:He asked for it. 这是他自找的。

  Baby doll 特别漂亮的女子,和蔼可亲的人

  Jack: Actually the general manager is regarded as a baby doll(和蔼可亲的人). He has much sympathy(同情心).

  John: That's right. And his wife is a baby doll(漂亮的女子),too. She used to have many followers(很多追求者).

  Jack: Were you one of them?

  John: Nothing of the sort(根本没那回事). I can't hold a candle to her(配不上她).

  Jack: But you did have a crush on(迷恋上)her, didn't you?

  John: Well, many of us liked her and we still think she's a knock-out(特别漂亮的人).

  Jack: Don't be knock over (晕倒)when you see her with my presents.

  Get ants紧张,烦躁,焦虑

  Sandra: It seems that you get ants(烦躁不安)when you hear I praise another guy.

  Frank: I get ants not 'cause you raise a guy, but 'cause you may be taken for a ride(被玩弄)by a guy like him.

  Sandra: How come you think of him that way?

  Frank: That's because you sound to have lost your vigilance(失去警惕性). You should be on the watch out (当心).

  Sandra: I have no reason to distrust him. He's never done any harm.

  Frank: Isn’t there anything that sounds fishy(可疑的)?

  Sandra: Nothing smells a rat (没什么不对劲的). I told you that he's an all-right guy.

  Frank: All-right guys! All right. Let's talk about something else instead of all-right guys.

  May: Of course you can't stay idle, but you must find something that you are good at. You can’t do things you are all thumbs(笨手笨脚的) at.

  Jim: I know. But how can I know what I am good at before I actually try?

  May: That can be costly. And once you have started on something, you will have to bone up(甩开膀子干) on it and move all the day up without hesitation.

  Jim: Well, I've come all the way to seek advice from you. I depend on you for directions.

  May: Depend on me? You must be pulling my leg(别拿我开心了)! I'm no good at doing business.

  May: Well, he's too busy to talk to you right now.
