  the gift of possibility

that christmas eve, the streets of boston were clogged with tourists and locals bundled in wool and flannel. shoppers, hawkers, and gawkers whirled and swirled around me。“frosty the snowman,”“let it snow!”and “jingle bells”played in stores; on the sidewalks, the street musicians did their best. everyone, it seemed, was accompanied by someone else smiling or laughing. i was alone.

the eldest of a puerto rican family of 11 children growing up in newyork’scrowded tenements, i’d spent much of my life seeking solitude. now, finally, at 27, a college student in the midst of a drown-out breakup of a seven-year relationship, i contemplated what i’d so craved, but i wasn’t quite sure i liked it. every part of me wanted to be alone, but not at christmas. my family had returned to puerto rico, my friends had gone home during the holiday break, and my acquaintances were involved in their own lives. dusk was falling, and the inevitable return to my empty apartment brought tears to my eyes.blinking lights from windows and around doors beckoned, and i wished someone would emerge from one of those homes to ask me inside to a warm room with a christmas tree decorated with tinsel, its velvet skirt sprinkled with shiny fake snow and wrapped presents.

i stopped at the local market, feeling even more depressed as people filled their baskets with goodies. dates and dried figs, walnuts, pecans, and hazelnuts in their shells reminded me of the gifts we received as children in puerto rico on christmas day, because the big gifts were given on the morning of the feast of the epiphany, on january 6. i missed my family: their rambunctious parties; the dancing; the mounds of rice with pigeon peas; the crusty, garlicky skin on the pork roast; the plantain and yucca pasteles wrapped in banana leaves. i wanted to cry for wanting to be alone and for having achieved it.

in front of the church down the street, a manger had been set up, with mary, joseph, and the barn animals in expectation of midnight and the arrival of baby jesus. i stood with my neighbors watching the scene, some of them crossing themselves, praying. as i walked home, i realized that the story of joseph and mary wandering from door to door seeking shelter was much like my own history. leaving puerto rico was still a wound in my soul as i struggled with who i had become in 15 years in the united states. i’d mourned the losses, but for the first time, i recognized whati’d gained. i was independent, educated, healthy, and adventurous. my life was still before me, full of possibility.

sometimes the best gift is the one you give yourself. that christmas, i gave myself credit for what i’d accomplished so far and permission to go forward, unafraid. it is the best gift i’ve ever received, the one that i most treasure.

  View in the heart

There is a temple at the foot of Nanshan, and an ancient banyan is in front of it.

One morning,a young monk gets up to clean up the courtyard and sees the fallen leaves from the ancient banyan are everywhere,he can't help worrying and look at the tree to sigh.

For his sorrow is on the toppest,he throws down the broom and rushes to his master's room ,then he knocks on the door to plea for interview.

His master hears it and opens the door, when he sees the disciple's worried look,he thinks something takes place,so he hurries to ask him:" My disciple, what does you worry about so much in the early morning? "

The young disciple is full of doubt and tells him:"Master, you persuades us to be diligent to cultivate our moral character and grasp the truth day and night, but, even I learn them well ,it is hard to avoid to die.Till that time,so-called me, so-called Dao, aren't they just like the defoliation in autumn or the deadwood in winter? and they will be buried by a heap of loess?"

After hearing it ,the old monk points at the ancient banyan and says to the young monk:" My disciple ,you don't need to worry about this.In fact, the defoliation in autumn and the deadwood in winter will climb back to the trees silently and become the flowers in spring and grow up into the leaves in summer at the time of autumnal winds is blowing strongliest and the snow falls down most heavily."

  "Why don't I see it?"

"It is the reason that there isn't any view in your heart, so you can't see the bloom ."

Facing the withering defoliations and imaging they will be in bud,it needs to have an immortal of spring heart, an optimism of heart.

There are always some miseries you will meet in your whole life and strike you when you are unprepared, but we don't need to worry day after day for the arrival of this day, and feel sorry to yourself.

Treating the life with the attitude of the optimism, it can not only dissolve the agony and misfortune , but also bring a kind of pleased mood to you everyday and make your life bright and flourishing .

As long as the view is in the heart, aren't the paths full of fragrance of flowers everywhere?

  The Nice Flowers

As the sun rose over the horizon, I went out to enjoy the beauty of the grassland scenery. On the way, I saw a pair of red flowers blooming. They had flat petals and were incredibly full of smiling beauty. Those independent flowers seemed very vibrant. Gazing at the flowers made me think of many things.

Dew like pearls shone on the grass brightly. Rays of sun offered happiness. I stood and stared at the beautiful flowers for a long time, enjoying the bright, pleasant sunshine. Butterflies and little bees were flying about. Then some naughty children with sticks came. One child swung his stick when he saw the flowers. Many petals fell to the earth, and with them, my heart fell too.

The next day, beside the road, the red flowers were brighter than the day before. The natural beauty made me gasp. It gave me an understanding of the energy of growing and youth and convinced me it couldn't be destroyed with a heartless stick. I wanted to be like the soul of a flower.

Then I saw an old woman and child coming along the road. When they reached the flowers the child quickly plucked one. I felt great horror and then heard the old woman say, "What beautiful flowers. Don't pick them." The next day, I couldn't see the flowers anymore. The grass and leaves on the ground were almost dried. I was in a world of great sorrow.
