  Back after 32 years (如果时光倒流32年)

The 2 teams - Australia and the USA played their opening games on the same day. One team came away happy and the other not so happy. Having moved to Australia many years ago as a professional footballer - it was nice to see my adopted country record its first ever win in a World Cup. When I arrived in Brisbane, situated on the east coast of Australia,so many years ago - the last thing on Australias‘mind was the World Cup.

It was a new country with only 17 million people who were and still are sports mad. However‘football’as the rest of the world calls it is not called‘football’in Australia and is not the number one sports las in so many other countries.

There are 4 other sporting codes that attract a greater following - Rugby League,Rugby Union,Australian Rules, and Cricket. Soccer(as it is called in the Antipodes)came in a distant 5th - why do we and the USA call it soccer?Australia has Australian Rules and The USA has American football, which is their football respectively,so media and federations decided to call the game soccer and not football.

That‘s also the reason so many English teachers from the USA and Australia teach the word soccer and not football to Chinese students.

Now back to football. It was one of those games that had more controversy than all the other games put together,a Japan goal that should not have been,a penalty that should have been, and 3 goals from Australia in the last 6 minutes to give them their first ever win in a World Cup. Today though, all the talk will be about the referee who made so many bad decisions. In the end there were 3 points for Australia which will be great for football(“O”sorry soccer)back in Australia. The USA will have to go back to the drawing board after their hiding from the Czech Republic.

Australia will play Brazil next. Perhaps another upset is in the offing- perhaps not BUT do not discount the“never say die”attitude of the Aussies!

Who would have given them ay hope of winning this game with 6 minutes to go and 1-0 down the best we could hope for was a draw perhapes, not this Aussie team“you beauty”a 3-1 win. I still have to pinch myself.

  Dead Ball Situations(定位球局面)

With training nowadays,as much time is spent on dead ball situations as there is on tactics and fitness. In today‘s’profession coaches have to:

1 Look at the strengths and the weaknesses of their opponents

2 Look at the dead ball specialists in other teams

3 Try to formulate a team that will counteract the opponents skills

Thus we appoint different coaches to oversee individual strategies thus enabling and affording the team as many opportunities as possible to win from.

  So - what is a dead ball situation?It‘s a free kick,a throw-in,a corner kick or a penalty.

We need specialty players in every team to be able to perform these functions. Specialists have become important to a teams game-play over the years as the level of skill and professionalism have grown.

Why the need?Because teams are so evenly matched nowadays - the smallest of advantages can be the difference between winning and losing.

Who are the players that can perform these very important parts of a game?

  Free kicks

Well in the author‘s humble opinion(and fairly much every other soccer buff’s)- the best in the world is David Beckham who currently plays for Real Madrid. Without a doubt he is the best taker of free kicks in the world.

How did this happen.David would spend 3 to 4 hours on his own after training practicing free kick after free kick every day. In the first game how did they score? From a free kick by Beckham,

  Throw ins

Australia scored their first goal from a throw in by Lucas Neil. Again he is another committed individual who spends his own time after hours practicing to get the distance he needs.

  Corners

Another very important aspect of play is corner taking which can result in goals and a few of these have been done at World Cup games inclusive of the current one.

Specialty players are not the ever-constant performers on field - they are however players who have exhibited the crucial specialist skill at the moment in a game when all eyes are on them and breaths are bated. Their physical skill and unseen hours of commitment to their task will be meted out within seconds - hopefully bringing to fruition the‘point’- the goal. The sliver of opportunity that presents itself will be just that - a sliver. Watch the specialist and opportunity go hand in hand.

So these points can be transferred into everyday situations during the lives we lead. What we learn and any task we choose to undertake requires we practice and commit to that task if we wish to see results in our favor. Even if its on our own time.

In sports or business to gain an advantage we have to know the opposition and be the best we can be at what we do.

  Coaches and Referees(教练与裁判)

We now look at the two men who have a great amount of influence on a game without even kicking the ball - coaches and referees. These two individuals can turn a game around by the blow of a whistle or the mere wave of a hand.

Over the years I have seen referees become more liberal on their interpretation of the laws of the game. This has(for some unknown reason)suddenly been changed by FIFA for this World Cup and one has to ask‘why’?

When I was a player you could not raise your hands to pull a shirt or to stop an opponent from beating you fairly. However over the last few years we have seen a decline in what is‘fair play’,what constitutes a foul and what doesn‘t.

For example - when a team is on the attack and wins a corner - we will see the big men come up for this. Within every league, especially in Europe, there is the shirt pulling, the wrestling, and the shoving that has become part and parcel of the game. Now we see referees going back to the rules which state a player cannot use their hands.

All of a sudden players are getting booked for fouls that they have gotten away with over a number of years. Why has this been lax for so long and discounted? As a winger and a small player these rules were to my benefit but over the last few years the smaller player has been handicapped by referees letting these sort of fouls go unpunished.

So as far as I‘m concerned it’s great to get back to the correct interpretation of fair play.

  The Coaches

We see on the TV the coaches who really kick every ball with their players by the way they behave on the bench. They‘re up and down like pedantic madmen - shouting, talking to the 4 officials, screaming and looking harried to all and sundry. Not in my day!Coaches were very quiet and the only time you would hear from them was at half-time. Now you hear every word every second of the game. They are the people who make the changes and have to live with the consequences of what they call. Some times they’ll come off the hero and other times they‘ll be the worst villain the country has seen that season. Unfortunately when things hit a low we know the eventual outcome is’sacked‘。

We are now over the first round of results and we have as usual a number of shock results .and by the end of the tournament some Coaches will be looking for another job some will leave a country never to return. Who would ever want to be one of these officials and never kick a ball its beyond me.
