After the stealing of fire,Zeus became increasingly unkind to men.One day he ordered his son Hephaestus tobuild an image of a beautiful maiden out of clay.He then asked the gods and goddesses to award her with different kinds of gifts.Among others,Athena clothed her in an attractive coat and Hermes gave her the power of telling lies.A charming young lady, she was the first woman that ever lived.Zeus called her Pandora.Because she had received from each of the gods and goddesses a gift. The gift was harmful to men.

Zeus decided to send her down to men as a present. So Hermes them essenger brought her to Epimetheus, brother of Prometheus. The greatness of her beauty touched the hearts of all who looked upon her,and Epimetheus happily received her into his house. He had quite forgotten Pometheus' warning:never to accept anything from Zeus. The couple lived a happy life for some time. Then trouble came on to the human world.

When he was busy with teaching men the art of living,Prometheus had left a bigcask in the care of Epimetheus. He had warned his brother not to open the lid.Pandora was a curious woman. She had been feeling very disappointed that her husband did not allow her to take a look at the contents of the cask. One day, when Epimetheus was out,she lifted the lid and out itcame unrest and war,Plague and sickness, theft and violence, grief sorrow, and all the other evils. The human world was hence to experience these evils.Only hope stayed within the mouth of the jar and never flew out.So men always have hope within their hearts.

One day one of God’s messengers descended to the world and happened to meet an eminentmonk who was telling fortunes for two boys. The monk pointed at one of the boys saying“Number One Scholar”, and at another one “Beggar”.

Twenty years later, the messenger came down to the world again. When he saw the previoustwo boys, he was puzzled about the outcome: the original “Number One Scholar” nowbecame a beggar while the original “Beggar” turned into a Number One Scholar instead.

So the messenger went to ask God.

God answered, “I endow everyone with talent, which only decides one third of his destiny whilethe rest lies in how he grasps it.”

  Life is just like this.

All over my garden I’ve planted nothing but roses, fragrant and—if looked at from afar—ablaze with color like sunset clouds, I’d be very happy if anyone of my visiting friends should desire to pick and take some for their homes. I trust that any friend of mine carrying the rose would vanish into the distance feeling that his emotions had been rekindled.

A close friend came for a visit the other day. I know her to be a lover of flowers and plants. And for that reason I told her at her departure that she should pick a bunch of roses to grace her boudoir. I promised that the scent of the roses would be wafted far, far away.

That girl friend of mine, tiptoeing into the garden in high spirits, sniffed here and smelt there, but in the end she didn’t pick a single rose. I said there were so many of them that she would pick as many as she’d like to; I told her that I was not a florist and didn’t make a living out of them. Saying so I raised the scissors for the sacrifice of the flowers, but she stopped me, crying no, no, no!

To cut such beautiful roses would hurt one, she said. With her hands clutching at my sleeves, she told me that by no means should they be cut. Roses are the smiling face of the earth, and who could be so iron-hearted as to destroy a smile so intoxicating?

My mind was thoroughly boggled: the ugly earth, the humble earth, the plain earth—it is for the sake of that smile that it wins the care and pity of people.
