Life, free to soar

  by Wayne B.Lynn

One windy spring day, I observed young people having fun using the wind to fly their kites. Multicolored creations of varying shapes and sizes filled the skies like beautiful birds darting and dancing. As the strong winds gusted against the kites, a string kept them in check.

Instead of blowing away with the wind, they arose against it to achieve great heights. They shook and pulled, but the restraining string and the cumbersome tail kept them in tow, facing upward and against the wind. As the kites struggled and kept them in tow, facing upward and against the wind. As the kites struggled and trembled against the string, they seemed to say,” Let me go! Let me go! I want to be free!” they soared beautifully even as they fought the restriction of the string. Finally, one of the kites succeeded in breaking loose. “Free at last,” it seemed to say. “Free to fly with the wind.”

Yet freedom from restraint simply put it at the mercy of an unsympathetic breeze. It fluttered ungracefully to the ground and landed in a tangled mass of weeds and string against a dead bush. ”Free at last”, free to lie powerless in the dirt, to be blown helplessly along the ground, and to lodge lifeless against the first obstruction.

How much like kites we sometimes are. The heaven gives us adversity and restrictions, rules to follow from which we can grow and gain strength. Restraint is a necessary counterpart to the winds of opposition. Some of us tug at the rules so hard that we never soar to reach the heights we might have obtained. We keep part of the commandment and never rise high enough to get our tails off the ground.

Let us each rise to the great heights, recognizing that some of the restraints that we may chafe under are actually the steadying force that helps us ascend and achieve.

Chain of Love

"How do you account for your remarkable accomplishment in life?" Queen Victoria of Englandasked Helen Keller. "How do you explain the fact that even though you were both blind anddeaf, you were able to accomplish so much?"

Ms. Keller's answer is a tribute to her dedicated teacher. "If it had not been for Anne Sullivan, the name of Helen Keller would have remained unknown."

According to speaker Zig Ziglar, "Little Annie" Sullivan, as she was called when she was young, was no stranger to hardship. She was almost sightless herself (due to a childhood fever) andwas, at one time, diagnosed as hopelessly "insane" by her by caregivers. She was locked in thebasement of a mental institution outside of Boston. On occasion, Little Annie would violentlyattack anyone who came near. Most of the time she generally ignored everyone in herpresence.

An elderly nurse believed there was hope, however, and she made it her mission to show loveto the child. Every day she visited Little Annie. For the most part, the child did notacknowledge the nurse's presence, but she still continued to visit. The kindly woman leftcookies for her and spoke words of love and encouragement. She believed Little Annie couldrecover, if only she were shown love.

Eventually, doctors noticed a change in the girl. Where they once witnessed anger andhostility, they now noted an emerging gentleness and love. They moved her upstairs whereshe continued to improve. Then the day finally came when this seemingly "hopeless" child wasreleased.

Anne Sullivan grew into a young woman with a desire to help others as she, herself, was helpedby the kindly nurse. It was she who saw the great potential in Helen Keller. She loved her, disciplined her, played with her, pushed her and worked with her until the flickering candlethat was her life became a beacon of light to the world. Anne Sullivan worked wonders inHelen's life; but it was a loving nurse who first believed in Little Annie and lovingly transformedan uncommunicative child into a compassionate teacher.

"If it had not been for Anne Sullivan, the name of Helen Keller would have remained unknown."But if it had not been for a kind and dedicated nurse, the name of Anne Sullivan would haveremained unknown. And so it goes. Just how far back does the chain of redemption extend? And how for forward will it lead?

Those you have sought to reach, whether they be in your family or elsewhere, are part of achain of love that can extend through the generations. Your influence on their lives, whether ornot you see results, is immeasurable. Your legacy of dedicated kindness and caring cantransform lost and hopeless lives for years to come.

The highest grace

A water bearer in India had two large pots, each hung on each end of a pole which he carriedacross his neck. One of the pots had a crack in it, and while the other pot was perfect andalways delivered a full portion of water at the end of the long walk from the stream to themaster's house, the cracked pot arrived only half full. For two years this went on daily, with thewater bearer delivering one and one-half pots full of water to his masters house.

Of course, the perfect pot was proud of its accomplishments, perfect to the end for which itwas made. But the poor cracked pot was ashamed of its own imperfection, and miserablethat it was able to accomplish only half of what it had been made to do. After two years ofwhat it had perceived to be bitter failure, it spoke one day to the water bearer by the stream.

"I am ashamed of myself, and I want to apologize to you."

"Why?" asked the bearer. "What are you ashamed of?"

"I have been able for these last two years to deliver only half my load, because this crack in myside causes water to leak out all the way back to your master's house. Because of my flaws, you have to do all this work, and you do not get full value for your efforts," the pot explained.

The water bearer felt sorry for the cracked pot, and in his compassion, he said, "As we returnto the masters house, I want you to notice the beautiful flowers along the path."

Indeed, as they went up the hill, the cracked pot took notice of the sun warming the beautifulwild flowers on the side of the path, and this cheered it some. But, at the end of the trail, it stillfelt bad because it had still leaked half of its load, and so again the pot apologized to the bearerfor its failure. The bearer said to the pot: "Did you notice that there were flowers only on yourside of the path, but not on the other pot's side? That is because I have always known aboutyour flaw, and I took advantage of it. I planted flower seeds on your side of the path, andevery day while we walk back from the stream, you have watered them. For two years I havebeen able to pick those beautiful flowers to decorate my master's table. Without you beingjust the way you are, he would not have this beauty to grace his house."

Each of us has our own unique flaws. We are all cracked pots. But if we will allow it, the Lordwill use our flaws to grace His Father's table. In God's great economy, nothing goes to waste.Don't be ashamed of your flaws.Acknowledge them, and you too can be the cause of beauty.Know that in our weakness we find our strength.
