  Text 10

I was 23 years old on a plane, returning home to Dallas, Texas. Like tens of thousands of others, I was just trying to get home without incident.

I sat, in uniform, in a window seat and avoided eye contact with my fellow passengers. No one was sitting in the seat next to me, which made me lonely. A young girl, not more than 10 years old, suddenly appeared. She smiled and handed me a magazine. I accepted her offering, her quiet ―welcome home‖. Her small gesture of pity was the first I had experienced in a long time.

I believe in the connection between strangers when they reach out to one another. That young girl undoubtedly has no memory of what happened years ago. I like to think of her as having grown up, continuing to touch others and teaching her children to do the same. I know she might have been told to give me the ―gift‖ by her mother. It doesn't matter why she gave me the magazine. The important thing is she did.

Since then, I have followed her example and tried, in different ways for different people, to do the same for them. Like me on that long ago plane ride, they will never know why a stranger took the time to extend a hand. But I know that my attempts since then are all because of that little girl. Her offer of a magazine to a tired, scared and lonely soldier has echoed throughout my life. I have to believe that my small gestures have the same effect on others. And to that little girl, now a woman, I would like to take this opportunity to say again, thank you.

W: Well, maybe if you can stay home for a few weeks, they'll relax their rules a little.

  Text 2

W: Happy birthday to you, Tom! Here is my gift for you. The birthday present in the box is from your grandparents.

M: Right, today is my birthday! I almost forget. Ah, what a nice toy car! Thank you, Mum, and I'll say thanks to my grandparents.

  Text 3

M: I'll go to Hong Kong to have a business trip. Will you go with me?

W: I'd like to, but what can I do?

M: I'll negotiate with a foreigner. You can help me when I'm in trouble.

W: I see. Two heads are better than one.

  Text 4

W: Where on earth are we?

M: Judging by all the traffic, I'd say we're near the heart of the downtown area.

W: Where did I do wrong? Did I take a wrong turn?

M: I'm not sure, but I think that you turned left when you should have turned right. Now the problem is how to get back onto the main highway.

  Text 5

M: How many books am I allowed to take out?

W: You can take two books out at a time. But you can't take out newspapers or magazines, they have to be read here.

M: How long am I allowed to keep the books?

W: For two weeks. After that you must renew the books if you wish to keep them longer. Otherwise we charge ten dollars a day fine for each book.

  Text 6

M: Are you free tonight, Mrs Smith?

W: I'm not sure, but let me check my calendar. Ah, no, I have nothing on tonight.

M: Great! Mr. Green has asked me to come over to invite you to the banquet that will be held in your honor at the Hongxing Hotel at 7:00 this evening.

W: How nice of him! I'll be delighted to go. Thanks for your invitation!

  Text 7

W: Finn has decided to take us out for a ride on his new motorbike today and he's not sure whether you would like to go.

M: I am, of course very glad to hear that. I think it will be good to get out of the studio. Look at all the beautiful, green fields around us.

W: Yes, beautiful green fields. That's the word for the day, isn't it: green?

M: Green, yes! Everyone knows the colour green!

W: The colour green? No, not that meaning, Wang Fei!

M: Oh, maybe another green? Oh, maybe, green with envy? I know that phrase, which means to envy somebody, doesn't it?

W: I'm sorry, Wang Fei. What I mean is I'm very green at riding motorbikes; that's what I wanted to say. Green means inexperienced or new to something.

W: You must be kidding! It is Chinese New Year, silly!

M: Oh right, it slipped my mind. Why do you celebrate two New Years?

W: Chinese New Year is according to the lunar calendar. Chinese have been celebrating New Years in this fashion for thousands of years.

M: I noticed that our company was very empty in the past couple of days.

W: That is because everyone goes home for Chinese New Year; it is a family holiday, not so much a party holiday. Would you like to come to my house for New Year's Dinner tomorrow evening?

M: Of course. Will you set off firecrackers?

W: Naturally, but the most important thing that we do during New Years is to eat! So make sure to bring your appetite!

  Text 10

M: Mary Ann Allison, suppose the teacher or professor gives you a choice of a topic, a subject, within a given field, what will you do?

W: Well, I have a couple of thoughts. The first, if you have any choice at all of a topic, is to do something that you're really interested in, because the more you're interested in it naturally, the better you'll write and the easier it'll be.

M: After you have found a subject you think you would like to write about, what comes next?

W: Once you've decided on something, another consideration would be how much information you can find. So, if I'm considering a topic, I do spend 10 or 15 minutes looking at information. My purpose is to see if there's enough for me to be able to easily research and write what I want to write. And if there's not, then I might choose something else to write on. And then the next thing that I would do is what I call a back-of-the-envelope outline. M: Back of the envelope, and what is that?

W: So that's when I sit down, maybe not at my desk, not at my computer, maybe even at a café, or with a cup of coffee. And I just kind of think about it, and I think about the topic and what I would say to a friend. And I just write down short notes about whatever comes to mind. What would I say to a friend about this? Or, what do I want to know about this? And when I have—oh, I don't know—anywhere between five and 10 points, I stop.
