When she was 18,Ahmad had her future figured out,“I was going to study biology in college,I would fall in love while I was there, and then I was going to medical school.” In reality,“nothing worked according to my plan,” Ahmad, now 26,says with a laugh, “Except I did fall in love, but it wasn’t with a person. It was with an idea."
That idea was feeding the hungry by redistributing (再分配)wasted food. Ahmad is the founder and CEO of Copia. Companies use the Copia app to report when they have leftover food, what kind, and how much. When recipients (接受者)such as shelters, soup kitchens, and agencies first register with Copia, they state how many people they need to feed,on what days, and what kind of food they’ll take.
How did Ahmad create Copia? As a senior at UC Berkeley, she was walking near campus one day when she saw a young man begging for food. She invited him to sit down for a meal. He told her his name was John and he had recently returned from Iraq, but he hadn’t eaten for three days. Ahmad had an aha moment then. While homeless people like John were starving, across the street the university dining halls were throwing away still-eatable food. She did some research and then started a student group that recovered food from campus and distributed it to local nonprofits.
After graduation, Ahmad worked with software developers to run Copia. It operates in 40 cities and has served over 700,000 people. Despite her busy schedule, Ahmad tries to do one food pickup a week. “When you get to the shelter,” she says, “someone opens the door, sees all the food, and says,‘If you hadn' t come, 270 people wouldn' t have eaten.' And ‘This is why I do what I do.'"

Meet the ROBOT barman James and he wants to serve you a drink when you approach him at the bar. Named after its creator, James has a tablet computer to establish eye contact with customers.
Funded by the EU, the James project involves such scientists and engineers as Dr. Jan de Ruiter from Germany’s Bielefeld University, along with partners from Edinburgh. The really curious thing about James is that he can read your body language to determine whether or not you,d like to order a drink.
The robot’s behaviour is based on an earlier study by Bielefeld University. The study, published in online journal Frontiers in Psychology, looked at recordings of customers at nightclubs to analyse how their body language attracted the human barmen’s attention.
“We are working on the robot’s ability to recognize when a customer is trying to catch its attention," says De Ruiter,“In order to respond in a proper way to its customers, the robot must be able to recognize human social behavior.” The robot requires a clear-cut definition of which signals show an order and which do not. Thus, the team took video cameras to pubs and clubs and recorded people ordering drinks at the bar.
It turned out that most people simply leaned in,perpendicular (垂直的)to the bar, and made eye contact with the barman if they wanted a drink, and if they didn’t want to order, they typically faced away from the bar or chatted with the person next to them.
Bielefeld University’s contribution to the James project was to program that knowledge into the robot. Dr Loth said, “Now James only talks to people whose position and body posture clearly show that they wish to order a drink.” The aim is to advance technology so that James can display socially intelligent behaviour that humans take for granted in daily life.
28. What contributed most to the James project?
A. The program written by Dr Loth.
B. Recordings of customers, orders in pubs.
C. The analysis of the barmen’s psychology.
D. A study of body language led by Bielefeld University.
29. The underlined word “clear-cut” in Paragraph 4 is closest in meaning to “_”.
A. easily understood B. clearly announced
C. carefully explained D. quickly connected
30. What seems to be scientists’ attitude towards the future of James?
A. Doubtful. B. Subjective. C. Optimistic. D. Uncertain.

How to Become a Scientist
Here is some advice for students who think they might like to become scientists.
31 One of the most important things you can do to become a good scientist is practice being a careful observer. Find a comfortable chair and put it in the middle of your garden or a park. Sit in the chair for thirty minutes or an hour. Watch the insects that fly past or land on the plants. Look at the shapes of leaves and branches. Listen to the sounds of insects. 32 Use a magnifying glass (放大镜)to look closely at interesting objects.
Learn everything you can about a topic that interests you. Suppose you’d like to explore flowers by using a microscope. Go to the library and check out some flower books. See what you can find on the Internet. Pick some flowers and carefully take them apart. 33 The more you know about flowers from reading about them and observing them, the more you’ll understand when you look at them with a microscope.
Ask for help from a knowledgeable person. After you’ve learned everything you can on your own, ask someone else to help with questions you still have. Maybe there’s someone at a nearby school or museum who knows about insects, spiders, or something else you’d like to learn about. 34
Find a scientist to talk to or find a place where scientific research is being done. If you still want to learn more, you can find a scientist to talk to at a nearby university,or research station. 35 Explain what you’re interested in. Ask if you can schedule a time to visit. Most scientists are happy to talk to students who share their passion for science.
A. Become an observer.
B. You may go seek answers from him.
C. Write a letter or an e-mail message to the scientist.
D. Research your questions using the Internet or library.
E. See if you can find a sight or sound that surprises you.
F. Use a magnifying glass to see how everything fits together.
G. Being a scientist is time-consuming and mentally demanding.

John lived in a village with his grandfather. Every morning men went to the farms, and children to the school. Everything was fine. Everyone was happy except John because his grandfather wouldn,t buy him chocolates or change his school bag. “For what are you saving money?” John shouted at his grandfather angrily. “These aren,t necessary and you are a very good boy. Aren’t you, my boy?” smiled his grandfather. He knew John was not as bad as he presented himself. He knew deep down John had a very kind heart. “Yes, I am good But you are the worst person I have ever met and I hate you.” John said and stormed out of the room to the school. He was getting late as usual.
His life was like this. Every day he fought with his grandfather at least once. His wishes were generally not satisfied, which really upset him. His grandfather wasn’t poor, but he wasn’t ready to spend on chocolates and clothes.
Upon his arrival at school,he heard his friends talking about the story of the unknown. The teacher had yet not come. He placed his ears into the conversation. “Do you know that someone placed five hundred dollars with a message inside Mr. Darwin’s house while he was sleeping." said his best friend Gum. “Yes. This happened not only to Mr Darwin but to many needy families. I wonder who did all this, perhaps God!” replied Tom. “My father is very ill. I wish God helps him, too.” said Gum in a low voice. “How great it is to get a surprise!” John thought.
When he returned home, his grandfather was watering the plants in their garden. On seeing him back, his grandfather asked,“How was the day, dear?” “Nothing special.” he said and went inside the house. His grandfather loved gardening, who could be found in the garden almost all the time. And John found it the most boring work ever. He had a strong feeling that his grandfather wouldn’t have become so selfish,if he hadn’t spent so much time alone in the garden.

Unquestionably, students find such an activity quite rewarding. Knowing that they have improved the lives of others, they feel a strong sense of fulfillment. It is giving that makes the difference. (83 words)
