Dear Son Jack,
Well, it has been some time since I received your fine letter. It makes me a bit proud and swelled up to get letter from you. It fills my old heart with gladness. Well, Jack, I was glad to learn how you felt about your summer’s work and your coming school year. The secret of success is concentrating interest in life, your studies, the small things of nature, etc. In other words, to be fully awake to everything about you and the more you learn, the more you can appreciate.
I think every person should think, act and believe without too much pressure from the outside. I, too, think there’s something that controls the universe. We know that nothing is destroyed, it only changes chemically. We bum up a house and its contents, we change the form but the same elements (元素) exist.
I had a couple of letters from your mother the other day, one written the twelfth and one the fifteenth. I’m always glad to get letters from her. She and I have been a complete failure financially but if the boys turn out to be good and useful citizens, nothing else matters.
The weather is fine up here, but I suppose it won’t last always, in fact we’re expecting some snowstorms. I know nothing about what I’ll do or if I’ll have a job when I leave here, but I’m not worrying about it because it’s no use worrying about what you can’t help.
Write and tell me all about your schoolwork and yourself in general. I’ll appreciate your confidence. You no doubt had some hard days on your job this summer. But they’re what builds character and physics. Well, Jack, I guess by the time you’ve read all this. So goodnight and pleasant dreams.
Your affectionate Dad.
21. What did the father learn from Jack’s letter?
A. Jack’s easy coming school year. B. Jack’s great secrets of success.
C. Jack’s hard summer’s work. D. Jack’s interest in natural phenomena.
22. From the second paragraph of the letter, we know the father wished his son to .
A. lead a difficult life B. lead an independent life
C. lead a comfortable life D. lead an adventurous life
23. What can be inferred from the letter?
A. Jack was very pessimistic. B. Dad was disappointed with Jack.
C. Dad had many warnings for Jack. D. The letter was full of instructive words.B
On Feb 6, Facebook and Google launched a project in Paris to deal with fake news stories that might appear around the upcoming French presidential election in April and May.
The project, called Cross Check, will help check news stories that are shared among French voters. At least 17 French news organizations are also taking part in the project, including French daily Le Monde, Buzz Feed News and Agence France-Presse. It will offer users the choice to identify and flag news stories as either “real”, “satire (讽刺)” or “fake”.
Misleading stories and fake news have become so common on social media during major elections around the world. Facebook in particular was criticized during the US presidential election last year for allowing false news to be widely spread across its platform.
Fake news may even have affected the election. According to a new survey carried out by the Pew Research Center in December, about two in three US adults said fake news stories caused a great deal of confusion about the basic facts of current issues and events. Nearly a quarter of US adults say they have shared a fake news story.
And it’s not just US adults who can’t identify fake news. A new study from Stanford University suggests that much like adults, US’ middle, high school and college students have a hard time identifying real and fake news articles.
As for this problem, Sam Wineburg, lead author of the study, suggested providing students with classes on media literacy skills, which means the ability to evaluate all forms of communication. “Teaching students media literacy skills provides them with the tools needed to be responsible and critical (批判的) readers of media,” commented Scholastic magazine.
24. According to the passage, the reason for launching Cross Check is that .

B. the US adults can’t choose the right president

D. fake news may affect the upcoming French presidential election
25. The underlined phrase “media literacy skills” in the last paragraph probably means .
A. tools to be responsible and critical readers
B. causes of a great deal of confusion in media
C. the ability to assess all forms of communication
D. the skills to root out fake news
26. From the text, we can infer that .
A. only US adults can’t identify fake news
B. fake news stories cause a great deal of excitement
C. it’s challenging to distinguish real and false news
D. teaching students media literacy skills has already started
27. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A. Facebook and Google
B. Fighting fake news
C. The fake news media
D. The presidential electionC
The text message answered by Aaron Amrich was sent by a 19-year-old woman who wrote that she was feeling hopeless and beginning to give up on life. Aaron, a veteran (老兵) who served in Afghanistan and Iraq, has himself suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder and depression. He understood the feeling.
For the past year, Aaron has been volunteering with the Crisis Text Line (CTL), a free, confidential 24-hour service that people in need of a lifeline can access via the number 741741. The line currently has 1,500 volunteer Crisis Counselors (顾问) across the country and has exchanged more than 19 million texts—50,000 messages a day.
As he had been instructed, Aaron “listened” openly and nonjudgmentally to the young woman. He didn’t offer advice; he didn’t try to help her solve her problems. Mostly, his messages mirrored back what he’d heard from her, occasionally emphasizing a strength that he’d noticed—like the fact that she d taken this step to help herself even in the midst of her depression.
“A lot of people have an overwhelming loneliness,” he says. “Sometimes it takes a stranger to say, ‘Hey, you’ve been through hell, but you’ve been helping yourself. If you can do that, you can do more.’ Many people reply, ‘I’ve never thought about it that way.’’’
The goal of a crisis line, explains Nancy Lublin, who runs the CTL, is narrow. Ifs not a cure; it’s meant to bring people from “a moment of hot to a moment of cool,” so counselors can suggest ways the texter can move to a place of increased safety. Researchers are excited about the text line. “Teens are unwilling to use crisis services,” observes Anthony Pisani, a suicide-prevention researcher. “But the CTL offers a layer of protection from the shame of expressing your weaknesses.”
As for the woman with whom Aaron was communicating, the opportunity to share her feelings with an empathetic person appeared to help. “She said she couldn’t remember the last time anyone had told her they believed in her,” Aaron recalls. She ended the conversation the way people often do, by texting, “Thanks for listening.”
28. The 19-year-old women in the passage is a typical example of those who .
A. have served in the army B. have given up on life
C. volunteer to help through D. are helped out by the CTL service
29. How has Aaron been instructed to help people in need?
A. He gives them a lifeline they need.
B. He listens and makes some suggestions.
C. He shares their feelings and recognizes their strength.
D. He provides them solutions to their problems.
30. The underlined sentence in paragraph 5 means .
A. to help people to calm down B. to take people to a cooler place
C. to bring people a moment of comfort D. to increase people’s awareness of safety
31. One of the benefits of CTL according to Anthony Pisani is that .
A. the texters can be moved to a safer place
B. the texters needn’t be ashamed to express their weaknesses
C. teens are protected by the Crisis Counselors through CTL
D. teens are brave enough to seek crisis servicesD
If last year was all about virtual reality (VR 虚拟现实), then 2017 belongs to augmented reality (AR,增强现实). It’s been around since the early 1990s, but recent developments have seen AR put into the hands of almost anyone with a smartphone.
Using special software, AR allows users to see virtual objects in the real world. Hit apps like game Pokemon Go and messaging app Snapchat mean that it’s more widely used than VR. But it seems that companies have bigger plans up their sleeves.
This month, Taiwan tech giant Asus released its latest smartphone, the Zenfone AR. What makes it stand out is the cutting-edge (前沿的) AR tech it uses — Google Tango. "Tango-equipped phones can understand the physical space by measuring the distance between the phone and objects in the real world.” tech site Android Authority explained.
Tango is thought to be the next leap forward in tech, and dozens of companies have already created innovative (创新) new apps for it. Measuring walls or curtains in your home, viewing the solar system in your bedroom, or checking what a new table would look like in your living room are all possible using the special cameras and sensors (传感器) of Tango smartphones.
But it’s not all just about fun and games. Present location technology in smartphones isn’t 100 percent accurate, meaning navigating (导航) indoors is difficult, but Tango devices’ special sensors allow them to “see” any in-door space. It’s hoped that blind people will be able to use this technology to help them find their way around inside buildings.
There are still problems with this, though, John Brownlee of Co. Design says, “Let’s say you need to direct a blind person to walk 50 feet in a straight line: How do you communicate to him or her what a foot is?” he wrote.
Google is working to solve these issues, however. “Nearly 20 percent of the US population will have a disability during their lifetime,” Eve Anderson, head of Accessibility Engineering at Google, wrote on the company’s website. “That’s why it’s so important to build tools to make technology easy for everyone.”
32. According to the passage, AR .
A. is a newly-developed technology.
B. connects the virtual objects to the real world.
C. is limited to games and social network apps.
D. has taken the place of VR in most smartphone apps.
33. What can you do with a Tango-equipped smart phone?
a. Measuring curtains in your home.
b. Helping blind people find their way indoors.
c. Viewing universe at home.
d. Designing a new table for your living room
A. a&b B. b&c C. a&c D. c&d
34. What can we learn about Google of this passage?
A. Google produces the cutting-edge smartphone, the Zenfone AR.
B. Google has found a solution to guiding blind people indoors.
C. Present location technology limits Tango devices’ accuracy of indoor navigation.
D. Google focuses on improving everyone’s life quality when developing products.
35. What is this passage mainly about?
A. The latest development in the field of AR.
B. Smartphones that bring AR to our life.
C. The launch of a new smartphone, Zenfone AR.
D. How the blind have benefited by Google Tango.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

Your personal strengths are part of what makes you unique as individuals. If you are not aware of your personal strengths, however, you don’t always use them as fully as possible. 36 Therefore, it’s necessary to find your personal strengths by the following suggestions.
Notice what you enjoy. The kinds of activities we like doing are often some skills we naturally enjoy. 37 And look at the potential elements that enrich these experiences for you. Can you see any patterns or shared skills among these things?
Ask trusted friends and family. 38 Many of us come from culture where it’s polite to be modest, and this can make it hard to identify our own strengths without any outside help. Ask trusted friend or family what they think your personal strengths are.
39 The qualities you particularly like about yourself will show your personal strengths. For example, if you like the fact that you stick to your goals and see them through, one of your personal strengths might be determination. In addition, think about what you enjoy about your work and why. If you’re struggling to find much that is enjoyable, consider what’s missing instead.
Realize what makes you proud. Think about three instances in your life when you really felt proud of the way you acted. What was it about your action that left you feeling proud? What values did you display and why did you feel proud of the way you acted? 39
A. Recognize the qualities you like in yourself.
B. Take a few moments to think about the things you really love to do.
C. Look for the strengths you admire about your particular role models.
D. Sometimes it can be hard to judge our strengths with accuracy on our own.

Good morning, everyone!
It’s a great honor for me to talk about some changes I’ve witnessed in the process of creating a civilized city. What has impressed me most is the traffic. We often saw pedestrians jump the red light. But now many volunteers stand at the crossroads, reminding the pedestrians to obey the traffic regulations. Of course, as educated citizens, we can do more to help our city to be more civilized, such as arousing the public’s traffic awareness and helping more people to become more self-disciplined.
Just as the saying goes, “Individuals together can make a difference.” I believe our city will become more civilized and harmonious through our joint efforts. So I’m here to appeal to everyone to do your bit for our city. Only in this way will our city take on a new look and become a better place to live in.
Thank you for listening!
